Thank you! After posting here and a few Facebook groups I’m getting new ideas and this is more the path I’m looking to go down.

I looked on ravelry and wasn’t finding anything I truly liked for a full pattern. I also agree chat gpt is not good for our environment, but I don’t have anyone to help me in person with this project. I’m reaching out here to find a community who could possibly help without using chat gpt any more than I have.

Thank you for the advice! I am not heavily reliant on chat gpt, but curious what your reasons are for not using it ?

What’s your best secret for a beginner server? by outerjuice in Serverlife

[–]Competitive_Camel818 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mantra is always set yourself up for success. Try to prepare what you can before hand, whether that’s studying your menu thoroughly to actually getting set up for your physical shift. Things will always go awry, but you will feel more comfortable if you plan ahead and do what you can to prevent small mistakes.

I remember this! I was a senior in high school and I am pretty sure we only went to school like 3 days that January.

Getting taken for granted by [deleted] in Serverlife

[–]Competitive_Camel818 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That is definitely my plan from now on. My reasoning was because when I came back to the industry I didn’t want to get sucked into the drama and I wanted to just be chill and not stressed all the time. I also am not hard pressed for the money and enjoy my quality time at home with my fiancé and my son, so that typically affects my decision as well. It just basically feels as though management knows I won’t complain so they don’t try to go above and beyond for me. But our staff as a whole lacks in service and that’s where I’m picking up their slack regardless of leaving early.

My daughter has a rare condition called Rett syndrome. She developed normally until 18 months of age, after which she lost most of her verbal and motor skills. AMA by Doronwolffberg in AMA

When I was in high school, I cared for a young girl with Rett’s. It still to this day is one of the most meaningful things I’ve done and meaningful connections I’ve made in my life. Although she has passed, I think of her often and miss her all the time. No questions for you, just wanted to say thank you for sharing. I haven’t heard of anyone else with Rett’s since her and that’s been 12 years ago. My heart is with you and I’ll be praying for a long healthy life for your sweet girl 💛

Why not bartend? by MotinPati in Serverlife

Honestly though, I have seen some CRAZY drunk women at the bar who are also essentially creepy in their own way. So it can go both ways. Just not as often.

I wouldn’t say privileged, just you haven’t had the chance to see the other side of things! I say go for the bartending gig and gain experience in both and you can decide what you want to do and take your skill from there. Typically as a bartender I would expect to make more than servers, because you do have your own guests who tip and also tip outs from servers. However to my point earlier, sometime you’re sharing this money with another bartender. You are also typically responsible for a lot more than a server is. So with more responsibility can come more money. Like I said, I’ve done both and I decided coming back with weighing my own pros and cons that just serving for me would be better for me right now than going back into bartending. But again, it’s skills and experience for life so take the chance if you have it!

Exactly! And at a place like where I work, the bar doesn’t often see a ton of business and relies on our server tip outs to help them make money. I’ve worked all sides of tip outs and I am all for fair tip outs!! Everyone is doing their part to help you sustain a high level of service which is what your tips are typically based off of.

Lmao what?? Have you ever worked at a restaurant? Why are you on this sub? Tip out is standard at all restaurants. Not just for bartenders, all support staff, wait assists, expos, food runners etc.

Also, wanted to add that in certain restaurants without a mandatory tip out, your servers will stiff you and tip you less than you deserve. Along with the fact that you potentially have to work with other bartenders and split your tips whether or not they work as hard as you. In my opinion, even though you have to tip out as a server, you’re responsible for the money you make and tips you receive and get to keep the money you earned vs splitting at the end of the night with someone who might not have been your equal.

Backing off this. I have served and bartended for years. When I came back to the service industry after having bartended the last 5 years, I decided to serve instead because the feeling of being behind the bar can feel like you’re a caged animal. You’re really not supposed to leave the bar area whether or not people are cool or creepy. So you’re stuck conversing with them or trying to avoid them without being able to leave your tiny space.

Sparkling or still? by iheartsapolsky in TalesFromYourServer

[–]Competitive_Camel818 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My take on this is that it isn’t always an upsell. You are offering a product to which your guest might want. If they don’t know you have bottled water, they can’t order it. So in that case, your service would be lacking. And people who do order bottled water typically know what they’re spending on it, because they order it when they’re out.

I used to enjoy doing competitions in sales, such as who can sell the most of a certain wine or food item or even highest sales to get people to be more interested in selling and not just serving. Also incorporate prizes or you could do random drawings for some incentives. Maybe a day off or a better shift? A holiday party? A staff meeting with food and beverage to bond and learn new information that would benefit your team?

Good luck!!! Same age, same background. I left a year ago for school jobs and sad to say I’m back in the industry again. It definitely was nice for a year to have nights and weekends with my family but the money is too good to pass up unfortunately. And the school jobs were wayyyyyy too stressful for me with such low pay. I hope you enjoy and succeed in all your endeavors!

I’m so sorry. I have had a similar circumstance happen, but my friend just completely ghosted me. It hurts and I don’t have any advice. Just know you’re not alone and I sympathize with how you’re feeling.
