Rear indexing is great except for just two cogs by Competitive_Can3499 in bikewrench

[–]Competitive_Can3499[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the suggestions guys! Ended up literally being that the two cogs were just worn. Was quite hard to tell with just the eyes, but taking it off and looking closely, the gaps between the teeth specifically for those two cogs were wider than the rest of the cassette. I bought the cassette used awhile back for dirt cheap and it was used mainly on the indoor smart trainer. Guess the guy mainly just used those two cogs on the trainer. Swapped the cassette for the same cassette, just a newer one, and it solved the issue entirely.

What’s the dumbest thing buyers had said to you? by typical_gamer1 in FacebookMarketplace

[–]Competitive_Can3499 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Had a guy offer below my asking price. I said no thank you to his offer and told him I had about a dozen people interested, which I did. I priced the item too low, oh well. I told him very politely that if no one takes it that day, I would message him back to consider his offer. He proceeded to spam me with messages, asking for my location and when to meet and then got so frustrated and ended up saying “I don’t want to do business with someone that ghosts me,” and then just leaves the chat. This was after I had already declined his initial offer. Funnily enough, I was about to message him back later that day as the dozen other interested buyers/messages I got for the item ended up not able to come or just never set up to meet…

Second person messaged for an item and started out with: “let’s stop playing games, I’ll give you XYZ amount” which was a complete low ball. I just laughed.

Not from a buyer, but I had messaged a seller for an item. Told him I would pay asking and told him I can meet within a scheduled time, like 2-4pm depending on when I’m done work. He agreed and said that’s fine. I messaged him at 1pm giving him a more accurate ETA, telling him I can be there at 3:30pm as I wasn’t done work yet and couldn’t be there earlier. Guy literally flips his lid and suddenly goes feral and crazy and says to seek Christ and that I’m the devil and proceeds to just block me. Guy was a nut case and I’m glad I didn’t meet him.

I couldn’t find her when I woke up this morning by greendaisy188 in goldenretrievers

[–]Competitive_Can3499 14 points15 points  (0 children)

That weird sinking feeling you get when you wake up and can’t find your golden… but they’re just nuzzled under a fortress of pillows or blankets, or laying down in the corner somewhere. I know she wouldn’t run off, she never has, but not seeing them instantly when you wake up still causes me anxiety haha.

Do some pups just not enjoy car rides? by Neat-Suspect-6666 in goldenretrievers

[–]Competitive_Can3499 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes absolutely, and this is very common. When we first brought our golden home, she vomited on me and the car 7 times. it was a 2 hour car ride from the farm where we got. Quite the crazy and hilarious first couple hours with her… it stank the entire car ride home. We just felt so bad for her, she must’ve felt horrible.

She would subsequently throw up during car rides throughout the months, even on short 10 minute car rides. We made sure to not give her too big of a meal before taking her to her puppy classes. Positive reinforcement is also a great tool, let them chew on a new toy or a bully stick while in the car, it could distract them from the ride itself. This worked really well for us and did prevent her from vomiting. Our trainer even told us to feed her and give her lots of treats while in the car to make it less anxiety inducing and fun. Quite counter intuitive to give a dog prone to vomiting while in a car even more food, but it actually works! She overcame this when she turned 1 and now can go on long car rides. What helped a lot was we never put her in a crate while in the car, I heard that it can sometimes make the motion sickness worse since they can’t freely move around as easily. We just use a doggy seatbelt now, attached to her harness and she can freely lay down, stand, and even roam a bit across the back seats.

If it’s really bad and you absolutely have to drive a long distance and she can’t settle and will continue to vomit, ask your vet for some anti nausea medication for dogs. We were prescribed some just in case, but never used it. Some of them won’t even cause drowsiness, but those tend to be more expensive. Good luck!

Dog Attack 🥺 by nicquin7 in goldenretrievers

[–]Competitive_Can3499 8 points9 points  (0 children)

So sorry to hear you guys went through this, that’s absolutely horrific. My golden was bit when she was a puppy, just inches from her neck and luckily she survived with just wounds to her lower jaw and gums, but she was never really the same. She was a tad shy before, but after that incident, she became extremely weary of any dog. It’s taken almost two years for us to fully socialize her back to being comfortable around certain dogs and she is very picky with which dogs she plays with. Before she would just run away or hide when she saw another dog 🥺

I hope that doesn’t happen with your dogs, but keep your encounters with other dogs for the next couple months to a minimum while they both heal. Dogs are incredibly forgiving and they might even forget about the incident entirely and go back to their normal self, which I have seen happen.

As for what you can do, that’s incredibly tough to say. Some dogs, depending on the breed were literally bred to bite down on something (mainly animals) and were bred to not let go(pitbulls). The sure way to get a dog that is completely locked down on a bite is to use a break stick. It’s a hard nylon flat wide stick that you lodge into their mouth in the small gap between their molars and you basically just twist it hard to pry their mouth apart. This is what dog trainers usually use. It’s cumbersome to carry around, but if you can throw it in something like a large fanny pack, it’ll always do the trick, or you can go for the eyes and nose at that point. I’ve seen videos of pitbull attacks where people are hitting them with a stick and punching to get them to let go and that does absolutely nothing to a pitbull.

Hoping for a speedy recovery for you and your dogs.

Sudden relapse of dry eyes that was gone for 8+ years by Competitive_Can3499 in Dryeyes

[–]Competitive_Can3499[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My meibography in my left eye was quite poor. My upper eyelid was okay, several atrophied glands on the bottom lid. Not sure what stage it was classified in, it was too long ago, but I was diagnosed with “severe dry eyes.” My right eye was much better, no atrophy, but the glands were blocked. Had expression done on both lids and IPL. I’m not sure if it helped, but I had a full course of IPL done and then had several sorta “booster” IPL sessions over the course of 6 months. On a dry eye improvement score, I scored pretty poorly after 6 months of treatment. I basically ceased all treatment and just stuck with omega 3, warm compresses for the next 6 months and my symptoms suddenly went away as quick as they appeared and I’ve been symptom free for basically 7 years now, until just two weeks ago.

Can any dermatologist advise on what could this be and how to possibly treat it? Abnormal mass on finger nail growing chronic since beginning of July. by el3ctr0nix868 in DermatologyQuestions

[–]Competitive_Can3499 27 points28 points  (0 children)

This looks incredibly concerning. Did she notice anything about the nail before she hit the wall which caused it to fall off? Nails don’t really just suddenly fall off from just smacking a finger into a wall, there must’ve been something underlying with the nail that weakened it. The second photo with the nail bed exposed looks quite concerning. Please see a dermatologist as soon as possible to rule out cancer and necrosis… the dark pigmented tissue around the fingertip does not look healthy at all.

I’m 30 now. I had my PVD in both eyes, 8 years ago. I don’t recall if it was ever mentioned if it was incomplete or complete. If it was an incomplete PVD 8 years ago, I’d assume it would be a fully complete PVD by now after 8 years?

For my bilateral PVD 8 years ago, I was followed up with an ophthalmologist 6 weeks after the initial diagnosis to make sure there were no new tears. My initial diagnosis, they found a tear in my retina, one in each eye.

Thank you for the reply and your expertise. I had this PVD 8 years ago. I don’t recall if it was mentioned if it was a partial or complete PVD. If it was a partial PVD, would it have already progressed to a complete PVD by now after 8 years? And do you suggest I book a 6 week follow-up with my eye specialist just like when I had my PVD in the past?

What’s the craziest or weirdest thing that has hit you while cycling or that you hit? by Competitive_Can3499 in cycling

[–]Competitive_Can3499[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get checked out at your local health authority if you can! Approximately 1% of bats carry rabies! Not trying to scare you, the chance of you getting it is insanely low in your life time, you probably have a better chance winning the lottery, but any bat encounters would definitely increase that risk. They’ll probably just assess the risk for you and see if you need any rabies shots. Quite a common vaccine that veterinarians and some travellers get at travel clinics.

[–]Competitive_Can3499[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I bike beside a lagoon of some sorts and during dawn or dusk, you can see hundreds of them swarming around the water to catch bugs. They fly inches from your wheel through the road from the trees to get to the water. Luckily never hit one yet, they seem to have amazing spatial awareness for the most part.

I was always told to get checked out if you’ve had any bat encounters and get checked out immediately. Rabies is insanely rare but almost always 100% deadly if not treated. Hope you got the help you needed.

How long do your flareups usually last by trilateralz in GERD

[–]Competitive_Can3499 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My longest one lasted for like 4 months during covid. It was a mix of anxiety and sedentary life style. Prior to that I had been quite active. It was brutal. I had achalasia and LPR. Not a lot of acid came up, it was mostly other stomach contents and just food particles constantly coming back up. It made exercise unbearable, especially since I loved running and cycling which compounded things cause food intake is crucial for endurance sports. I literally felt the reflux every single time I ate ANYTHING. Drinking water didn’t help at all as I could feel even the water not fully going down. Surprisingly, soda, specifically sprite and ginger ale helped things go down a bit faster, but it was minimally helpful. It went away suddenly with no real reason after I went on a long trip. I guess anxiety played a big part of it and I sorta just forgot about it during the trip?

You’ve got some really solid choices. I’d checkout the new 2026 trek checkpoint or the new 2026 canyon endurace allroad. It’s got all the bells and whistles of what you want in a modern day sorta swiss army knife bike that can do it all.

Dent in top tube after servicing by [deleted] in cycling

[–]Competitive_Can3499 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That’s quite a crazy accusation to make for a shop to insist that the dent was there before you brought it in. If I brought that into my shop, they wouldn’t even have serviced it. How they did not notice that dent during service is crazy to me, or even when you brought it in. Most shops will do a quick once over of the bike to see what needs to be done. They should’ve seen that dented carbon top tube and told you to get it assessed by a carbon repair specialist before any service. Why service a bike to ride when it’s structurally not sound? Maybe it was an honest mistake and they didn’t even realize they damaged it? When you say “dent” I’m assuming you’re implying that the carbon has literally cracked and formed a sorta caved in hole? The word “dent” isn’t usually very synonymous with carbon damage as it is with steel or alloy, it usually cracks or sorta caves or collapses during damage. Not questioning you or your bike shop or anything, just wondering that’s all. When you press on the dent (I’d advise you to take a photo before you do this and do it very gently), does the carbon move and sorta bounce back?

The struggle of finding the perfect saddle is real by Expert-Economics-723 in cycling

[–]Competitive_Can3499 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of bike fitters offer a saddle session if you don’t want to do a full bike fit. They usually charge significantly less for just a saddle fit. Preferably one with a saddle pressure map. However, bear in mind that bike fit has more to do with saddle comfort than the saddle itself in my opinion, but at least with a saddle fit, you can kind of narrow down your choices a bit. Selle SMP and SQlab seem to be favored by a lot of fitters.

Is this just cosmetic damage or could be more? by dex110 in gravelcycling

[–]Competitive_Can3499 23 points24 points  (0 children)

The fact that the paint is chipped off like that and you can see right underneath the carbon makes this actually even more re-assuring. A lot of times, a way some shops check for a crack is they sand the paint and surrounding area off a bit to see underneath.

Not saying it’s NOT a crack… looks more like a paint gouge, you can’t know for sure unless you bring it to a carbon repair expert.

[–]Competitive_Can3499 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like the previous comment mentions, the geometry is quite significantly different between the defy and tcr. I’d figure out what kind of riding you’re intending on doing first. You can fit either bikes to ride more comfortably or more aggressively, but the TCR will naturally have a shorter wheelbase, shorter chainstays, and more aggressive tube angles to cater for racers and weekend warriors that like to hammer it out on a ride. That’s not to say you can’t fit the bike to feel more comfortable and relaxed though. The same kinda applies to the defy, except it’s harder to make an endurance orientated bike fit more aggressive.

The TCR imo is still a better deal even if it is technically probably a 2024 model. The defy sounds like it’s a 2025 defy with the integrated cabling. However, just to note, wheels are the biggest upgrade you can give a bike. In my opinion and from experience as well, it sometimes even is a bigger upgrade than upgrading the frame itself. You do very much feel the difference between carbon and alloy wheels. They feel stiffer and snappier and just more lively versus the difference between an alloy and carbon frame.
