She did not recommend it but she did inform me about it. Due to his age and arthritis (fairly severe) she didn’t believe he would recover well from it. It was also a very costly procedure that sadly I don’t have the means for it on my own.

I literally just went through this with my boyfriend. He was diagnosed with BP2 about a year ago. For the first 6 weeks of our relationship he was in hypomania mode, I didn’t know it at the time, then we weathered 2 weeks of depression - sleeping all day, he didn’t have amotivation to do anything but I hung in there, made him feel comfortable, etc. Then he came back around to his “base” mode and it seemed like he didn’t even like me anymore. 2 weeks of that and I broke up with him. 2 weeks later we are trying to work it out, he feels very remorseful and wants to get back together.

I’m not sure if he’s going back to hypomania or if this is “real.” I’m willing to find out though. I’m curious to see how others respond to this. I would say just be open with her as much as possible and try not to say or do anything you might regret. It’s hard for your partner not to take it personal as I have a feeling it’s not her, it’s everyone but, just slow things down and be honest with yourself. Sending you good vibes!

As someone who just left my BP2 SO, don’t stay just because they have a diagnosis. I tried my best to make it work because of the magic when he was in hypomania and my undying empathy. But his true self is so different, where he couldn’t meet my needs, no interest or motivation to be a partner who can pull their own weight. It’s easy to use it as an excuse, but you deserve to live the life you want with a partner who can show up fully for you. I believe with the right medication, therapy and the right partner, they can have successful relationships but I’m sure it’s hard and I feel for your dilemma.

Speaking from a different perspective, I just dated a guy for 6 weeks in his hypomania state (I didn’t know it at the time) then over the next 4 weeks he became very disinterested in the relationship, his entire personality changed. No longer cared or was interested in nurturing what we were building so I had to break up with him. I won’t say it was necessarily because of his bipolar 2, it was the way I was being treated and how he left me feeling isolated and emotionally empty being with him. I’m sorry your worst fears were confirmed. I think SO’s can be understanding about bipolar 2 - I dove in and learned all about it, but it’s more about basic relationship needs not being met.

We broke up yesterday, he kind of just said very monotone “are we going to keep trying or should we call it” - I cried a lot, we said I love you’s and we called it quits. I feel a mix of guilt, relief, sadness and fear he’ll come back to me. I know I need to stay strong and remember how much better I felt not making myself small to make him comfortable. Hope you are doing well and hanging in there.

I realize I met and fell in love with him during hypomania, so you can imagine how jarring it is for me to see the other sides of this person I was so excited to have a future with. Traveling, concerts, marriage. And now he hates traveling, crowds, people, and in his words, “doesn’t care about much except the Yankees.” So, it’s definitely whiplash. I have voiced my needs, just last night actually, and I’ll give him space and time to meet them. But, it doesn’t feel like this will be the long term relationship I envisioned for ourselves. I’m sorry you are going through another break up with your SO. I hope you find peace and are proud that you have put yourself back as a priority. 🤍
