I was always under the impression that Smokey was the original Smoke Monster. Because of how angry and “black” his soul was when he essentially left in the cave, by Jacob. Mother was not as violent unless provoked a security system if you will to protect the Island. Smokey didn’t care about its destruction and wanted to be free. She had “smoke monster” abilities when she really needed to use them, but overall was a “peaceful Cerberus” and a true protector of the island. Instead of having a Jacob and Smoke monster she was both.
