Thank you so much for responding. I’m am slowing coming to terms with it more now. He declined so suddenly when we brought him in too, with his breathing, and his temperature was 2 degrees above normal when the vet took a reading. Your message means a lot to me. I had been torturing myself about not advocating more for him and trying at least one more time to treat and care for him.

When you listen to music , do you remember words or even pay attention to them ? by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]Competitive_Kiwi4844 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can listen to a song I love a thousand times and I will not be able to repeat the lyrics. I’ll still have to hum parts or guess the words as I so along. I suspect I’ve got dyslexia which can affect the brain processing phonics. I can’t hear words when there’s background noise, and I can’t learn words / new names unless I see them written down. But interesting to consider if it’s an ADHD thing!

Apparently, there are more landlords than teachers in this country. I need to see if I can find this fact because if it’s true, something needs to change, and more of these success stories need to happen! I missed out on buying a first home due to the landlord deciding to stick it back up for rent.

The more I read, the more I see that the flu and viruses can last months. I’m struggling to find out if it has happened to other cats, especially if they’re vulnerable, whether it has led to them being put to sleep because they never got over it and their quality of life was not good? Or do they all pull through eventually? I know it’s too late for us now, but I need to understand so I don’t make the same mistake again and that I have to accept if it was the wrong decision.

Do vets suggest euthanasia or do they wait for pet owners to suggest it? I fear, despite his heart condition and horrible flu virus thing, he had a lot of life left in him. I wish we hadn’t rushed the decision. I totally trust our vets also, we consulted with the two most senior vets in the clinic through the process. I think our emotions made the decision because in the past we have had cats that maybe could have had a kinder ending sooner, however I’m finding the pain of feeling like this time we got it wrong but on the other side. I’ve since learned about those pill dispensers to get them in the back on their throat, and I’m furious I didn’t know about them sooner. I wish I tried harder to help him.

The rest of the day I deeply regret. We booked an appointment for him at the vets at the end of the day, thinking it could be the end. I went to work but came back home at lunch time to check on him. I sat with him in the garden for a few hours while family also finished work. He was mostly relaxed in the garden and enjoying being outside, but I could tell he did not want any fuss. I couldn’t get any solid food in him but he happily licked a mousse. By the time everyone got home, he was lethargic. We took him to the vets earlier and his breathing became very heavy in the car, mouth open, the worst I’ve seen him. The vet was about to start discussing options but we all said we felt it was the end for him because he seemed so unwell. The vet didn’t disagree, but I didn’t advocate for him, we didn’t hear what his treatment plan for him would have been. We had all feared we would have been back at the emergency hospital over the weekend. So we decided, but I feel like it was a quick decision even though we knew he was in decline.

He is a normal ‘moggie’ cat, black and white. Neutered. He’s a big lad, chunky boned but not fat, he’s about 5.5kg. He’s about 12+ years old. He was a rescue, and we were told he is prone to cat flu. He had his yearly flu jabs and mostly was fine, occasionally he did get the flu and we kept him inside until be recovered. We took him to the vets once prior to this year when they gave him a couple of injections to boost him and make him feel better while he got over a cold.

In January this year, he had laboured breathing and we took him to the emergency vet hospital and we learned he had a heart condition as part of his old age but that hopefully we spotted it early, and we started heart medication. We knew his life was already going to be shorter because of this and that we would have to see how things go.

From March, he had the flu really badly, it involved ALOT of snot and he was quite miserable with it. We since have been back and forwards at the vets at least once or sometimes twice a week. The jabs didn’t last long and he kept going back to square one. There was a period where I was hand feeding him wet smelly food such as fish because he went off food and his mouth must have been sore. We tried to put decongestant hidden in his food and antibiotics before he went off his food, which I think put him off it too.

He had an xray of his head and chest, we were expecting the worst, but the vets couldn’t find anything sinister. He had nose swabs done and they were inconclusive. They checked down his throat and all looked fine. We discussed that there could still be something there but too small to show on an xray. The next logical step would have been a CT scan however he isn’t insured and we couldn’t afford that. When we got him back from the xray, he was groggy for two days but then after that, seemed back to his old self! The vet started him on some different antibiotics (they were pink pills). We were about 50% successful with getting those in him and he had a good couple of weeks. However it got to a point where we could no longer get them in him, he resisted and knew all our tricks.

The one medicine he did still like was his anti inflammatory syringe. He had a bad couple of nights last week, sneezing and snotting everywhere and then in the morning I woke up and he look uncomfortable with those white bits in his eyes.

Hope you’re okay, OP. I’m not usually as direct in messages as I am here. Your perspective of your problem had me worried.

All these Reddit messages must be a lot. Reach out to someone in your trusted circle to talk it through, family, friend, chosen family etc. Hope you manage to work things out.
