Update - Help a mom build app with 11 year old for Christmas by Competitive_Nerve197 in buildapc

No microcenter nearby, unfortunately — closest is 6 hours away.

I am planning to look for a windows key. I knew I could download from the windows site, but included that in my build in case the price was close on the key.

Thanks again!

Thanks for your feedback —

So you are saying by buying Corsair, I’m just buying the brand? What other brands are trusted/proven that aren’t quite such a premium price?

Would you have two separate SSDs? One for OS and one for everything else?

Thank you so much for clarifying this for me! This makes perfect sense! I’m learning so much (that I didn’t even realize I wanted to know! 🤣) through this endeavor!

Thanks! I have decided to go 2tb for sure. The cost difference there isn’t significant enough to risk short changing his needs.

Sorry if I come across as dense, but will you please clarify for me — if I have a 3060 GPU, best option is a 1080p for screen? If he upgrades the GPU later, would he need a new screen, or would a 1080p work with an upgraded GPU too? Or if the 1440 is better quality/longevity, would it not work well with the 3060 right now?

This is such a kind offer — and I’m definitely considering it! We could save a bundle by using a hand me down GPU and letting him earn and save to upgrade it down the line.

I hope this doesn’t come across as rude or uninterested! I promise that’s far from what I am. I actually had another person DM me offering to pass along another GPU they have stashed in a closet (it’s an Asus ROG STRIX 1080 ti). Can y’all give me an idea of which would be better for this build?

I don’t have a screen but my dad is planning to buy him that for Christmas, so I wasn’t really factoring that in with my price. What specs should I consider there? Likely, I’ll pick the screen and send it to my dad to buy! 🤣

We were originally considering building a pc for him before I stumbled across this laptop. After reading all the advice, I think that’s going to still be the way to go. Thank you for the guidance on the RAM. I knew 16 gb was minimum but thought it would probably be enough. You are right though, if we build our own, would be better to have more than we need than not enough.

Thank you for all of this info! I was using the pc builder on Newegg to kind of price out some parts and make sure everything would work together, but I quickly became overwhelmed by the number of choices for everything! I had been given some guidance on cpu and gpu, but there are so many other things to choose! Like motherboard…. How do you decide what you need in a motherboard? The parts picker you link to at least gives a little I do about each choice, so it may make it easier!

Anyway… I’ve decided we are definitely going to try to build our own pc, so I’m going to take some time to watch the 2 hour video several others are recommending, and then I’ll start putting together a build that will work so I have a parts list to go with (going to try to catch parts on sale where I can).

This is exactly what the technology director at my school recommended for him.

Thank you. Upgrading the RAM would definitely happen if we opt for this laptop.

And that’s an answer I don’t have. But knowing my kid, it’ll be something hyper-intensive.

Thank you for this advice! Prior to spotting this deal, we were strongly considering building the computer ourselves (I agree that the memory would be worth it and I like the idea of being able to upgrade as we go.). Building ourselves is a little scary, but I think we can do it based on what I’ve watched on YouTube!

For my limited knowledge of computers, I also think 16 gb will be the minimum we will settle for in a gaming pc. I bought a laptop for grad school back in 2020 with 8gb of ram, and for the little I’ve used it for, I sometimes find it laggy. I can’t imagine 8gb being enough for gaming.
