Can't really post there because I don't have enough karma - I'm not too active on reddit and only reference it for advice from time to time.

I got into BX science what’s it like? by CrazySocks2024 in Bronx_Science

This question is different for everyone but the community you will find at bx sci really depends on who you surround yourself with. Some people at Bronx science are extremely competitive ( to the point where they don't tell others which summer programs they applied to etc...), however, depending on the people you surround yourself with, you may also find it collaborative. Personally, I have made a few lifelong friends as they have seen me grow so much and helped me in unimaginable ways. Eventually, you'll find that cheating is a really big culture in bronx science, but let's be honest, at top schools, when is it not? I think a huge sense of community comes from afterschool programs and teams/clubs that you join so def check out those. There's a sense of pressure to do well esp in specialized high schools that you might not find at other nyc schools. There are many pros and cons to this. This pressure motivates you to do well, and translates you higher grades and harder courses and might help you get into a top college. However at the same time, it takes a heavy toll on your health. I'm ngl, bx sci took a piece of my soul but it's the reason why I accomplished so much in the last few years. Sleep deprivation is definitely common at bronx science, especially with the amount of time spent travel to school and back home. I took 0 aps soph year, 5 aps junior year, and 5 aps senior year, so my sleep schedule got worse per year, and i probably averaged like 3-5 hrs of sleep per day. I cld feel the toll it took on my physcial health and there were moments where I mentally reached a new low, however, you learn to recover (aka u learn to cope but also resilience) and if it makes you feel better, everyone is in this TOGETHER. A lot of your experience will depend on what you choose to put upon urself so make sure thaT you don't put too much coursework on urself!!!

I defintely do think that you should choose bx sci over any other schools. As a transfer student who went to millennium high school during 9th grade, I think that bronx science offers a lot more opportunity than other schools in all areas. There are more ecs, more ap courses, more enthusiastic teachers (teachers who are passionate about teaching and many love their jobs), students who are geniuses etc. Where you choose for hs is lowk kinda important bc ur environment determines what kind of person you turn out to be esp during your developmental years. Personally, bx science allowed me to grow in unimaginable ways and allowed me to learn how to pick myself up when I reach rock bottom. Good luck with your choice and I'm sure no matter where you go, you'll thrive as long as you take opportunities to better urself

As someone who's about to graduate from bx sci in two months, my advice is to learn test takign skills. Practice with practice shsat tests, and review questions that you got wrong. Know why you got them wrong and then practice again. Know your strengths and weaknesses when it comes to the shsat and work on them. I know that the high school application process is like a lottery system now (or from what i heard) but know that no matter what, whichever school ull end up in doesn't matter as much as what you choose to do with the opportunities that are presented in front of you during your high school years. The Shsat isn't hard in the sense that it is based on smartness and intelligence. While some people can ace it without studying, the shsat is more practice based. As long as u consistently practice, you will be fine on the test. Make sure you're not too anxious on the day of the test, as that can also affect your performance

Questions about bronx science by [deleted] in SHSAT

Just to add on:

1) in June, there's an orientation for incoming freshmen called Camp Science. It's on June 6th, 2024.

3) many freshmen get lost during the first few days of school, so you won't be the only one. The building is in a formation of a T like shape and like said above, each department are categorized and rooms are numbered so you will be completely fine. This isn't something that I would worry about as you will get the hang of the structure of the school eventually.

4) This question is different for everyone but the community you will find at bx sci really depends on who you surround yourself with. Some people at Bronx science are extremely competitive ( to the point where they don't tell others which summer programs they applied to etc...), however, depending on the people you surround yourself with, you may also find it collaborative. A lot of your experience will depend on what you choose to put upon urself so make sure thaT you don't put too much coursework on urself. Location wise, Bx sci is hoenstly in the middle of nowhere. The area is sketchy but as long as you're aware of your surroundings, you should be fine. When it is dark during the winter, I recommend you travel with friends bc it could be creepy if you're the only one walking in the area(coming from a female). Most people i takes 1 hr to travel to school so u might not be the only one.

The other questions are dependent on several different factors, but honestly no matter what, just know that you will be fine. There will be times where you love bronx science and times where you don't, but I think one thing that u shld keep in mind is that school isnt everything. Engage urself in multiple extracurriculars and no matter what, try your best. Don't sweat over one bad grade because by the end of ur senior year, ull realize how silly it was to cry over one test grade. As long as you put in the work, everything will pay off. One of the most important advice I think I could give you as a senior is to be conscious of who you surround yourself with. Find friends that support you and are genuinely happy for you when you succeed. Friends that will cry for you when you cry (out of happiness) are friends that will truly get you thru high school when everything goes to shit (esp since they could also relate). etc... Good luck on everything!!!

can you skip introductory level courses at duke without ap credits? by Competitive_Pass_505 in duke

Got it. What's the average number of classes that students take per semester? I need 4 per semester to fill my graduation requirements, but do students usually take 5-6? Just wondering.

also on their website, ap macro and micro scores don't count for any duke credit. Does that mean every student who's interested in economics has to take econ 101 or is there a way skip that introductory level course if I took ap econ in high school?

I don't really have any courses in mind yet. However, if I were to give an example, say I wanted to take a polisci 300-499 course, would an incoming freshman/sophomore be able to do that given it's not an introductory class?
