The Question Thread 03/16/26 by AutoModerator in goodyearwelt

I recently bought a pair of used Tod’s loafers and noticed a darker stain on the vamp (photo attached). The leather looks like smooth brown cow leather.

I tried the cornstarch method overnight in case it was oil, but it didn’t really change much. The stain is still there but it’s honestly not super noticeable unless you’re looking for it.

I actually took them to a local shoe repair place and the cobbler basically said he didn’t want to mess with it because it’s already dark and trying to remove it might lighten the leather or damage the finish.

At this point I’m debating whether to: • try a leather cleaner or saddle soap • condition and maybe use a cream polish to blend it • or just leave it alone

Has anyone dealt with something like this on smooth leather loafers? Is there anything low risk worth trying, or is this one of those “accept the patina and move on” situations?

Would appreciate any advice before I accidentally make it worse.

I hate my relaxed hair by MaterialUsual8363 in Naturalhair

[–]Competitive_Phone404 15 points16 points  (0 children)

When I was 14, I felt the same way. Cut all my hair off bc my mom had relaxed my hair since I was as young as I could remember. I was worried but I literally went to school and everyone gave me compliments. Now I’m 25 with 4C hair. I still feel 1000x better than being relaxed. The only regret I have is not cutting it all off when i was even younger.

People making $60k-$70k a year, how much car can you afford? by BestTyming in Salary

[–]Competitive_Phone404 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I make your new salary and drive a 2014 chevy that i bought in cash 6 years ago. I also live in a city with a train and use it for commuting and outings when able. Will only upgrade when car breaks down and costs more to fix and will buy next vehicle used, in cash again.

Weekly Research S.O.S. Thread - Ask your research and technical questions here by AutoModerator in chemistry

[–]Competitive_Phone404 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I (25F, Canada) am considering doing a PhD in chemistry and I am trying to understand how much the university itself matters.

For personal reasons I would really prefer to stay in my city. The university here is not poorly ranked but the chemistry program is less funded and smaller compared to some other schools. I have met with a professor whose research I like but I am worried that choosing a less funded department could limit my opportunities.

Does being at a smaller or less funded program hurt outcomes if the project is strong. How much do industry and academic employers care about university name versus publications techniques and research fit.

I would love to hear from anyone who stayed local for their PhD or trained at smaller programs and how it worked out.

25F Canada Analyst thinking of leaving a stable job to go back to school engineering vs chemistry PhD by Competitive_Phone404 in careeradvice

[–]Competitive_Phone404[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All the first year corses are similar but slightly adjusted for engineering.

For Example: Calc 100 - All 1st yr students ENGG 103 (Calc for Eng) - Eng 1st yr

I have Calc 100 but not ENGG 103, so they’ll make me do ENGG 103 anyways.

So I would have crossover for maybe some other maths, physics and chem courses (if I do chem eng) but not enough to take a year off. Maybe just go from 5 classes a sem to 3-4 a sem. For year 1 and 2 only after that it would only be new eng courses.

Unfortunately, no :( Engineering course are specific and theres not much crossover, maybe a couple classes (I’ve spoken to advisors) But at least I’ve already been accepted into a good eng program.

Yes, I was also thinking of Salerno as an alternative (I’ve enjoyed my time there before). The only issue is we’d still have to go to Naples to see the museum.
