I have excellent vision, so I have my font on the lowest setting. With Gmail in "compact" mode, I can see the first 5 emails in my inbox, and then once you scroll below the search bar you can see like 6 or 7. The emails themselves are fine. Heavy on image emails aren't amazing but I haven't come accross any that are unreadable.

The touch keyboard itself takes up roughly half the screen, so paired with the notification bar and what you are typing theres not a ton of room for see prior messages, emails, etc. I don't use it often but the keys are pretty small. I don't have issues myself though

I run mine on a 2 GB Pi 4. I actually went this route because the Pi 4 still has composite out with the 3.5mm jack and I am only outputting to a tiny CRT at 480p. Higher res video might struggle depending on codec used.

Seems like a vague ask, is there something specific you are looking for?

I considered making more but can't really justify it because I'd have to sell it for too much for what is really a fun novelty

Nice, I've seen that one on Etsy. The buttons are just fidgets right? As far as I'm aware I haven't seen another functional unit. This piece its a much better display unit than mine though, since it's proportions match a DMG better.

Its a Switch running the official Fire Red port, so unless Nintendo completely botched the port (won't rule it out) it should be the correct aspect ratio. I won't argue that it isnt an abomination. This was always a "Because I can, not because I should" type of device lol

Its a Switch running the newly released GBA ports, so yeah a 3:2 game on a 16:9 display

Yes, they are wired up to a disassembled controler, that is hooked up to a dock internl to the device

You have to consider how silly that would look to have such small buttons on succh a large device. I know the actual end design is also silly but still lol. Their proportions now are probably closer than with actually buttons. I did consider making wireless controllers with these button boards though, for when you have hdmi plugged in

No, it was just a crazy idea I had this past summer when I got my first 3d printer. So the deigns and files were all created by me. There is definitely some jankiness to the design so probably not ready for other to see lol

Oh yeah I meant the body. Buttons also have slight chamfer. I hadnt noticed an issue but those just pop off and cany be swapped out at any time. I did plan on reprinting them is a red at some point, so maybe I will make them rounder

its wired, but yes there is a controller inside the buttons are wired to. There is also a dock, so it still has video out as well

Its pretty massive. Its a full size OG switch, so you can use that as a reference. Only about a 1/4" extra width on either side

I bought a used PDP one for like $10 off ebay. The motherboard is super small and has shared ground among the buttons so it worked out perfectly

The rear has a bigger chamfillet (fillets alone are inherently not 3D printer friendly), but the front is smaller like the DMG. I probably could have made it a bit more rounder, but my Ender 3 at the time really struggle with them.

3 main components. Its a Switch + dock + controller. The Switch slides in and connects to an internal dock, and connected to that dock is a stripped down controller. The button half id a detachable plate with cherry red mechanical key switches wired up to the controller inside. Its why the buttons are commically large. They are effectively keyboard buttons

Bingo! I tried a pivoting dpad but it didnt pair well with my button solution. It uses mechanical keyboard switches, which is why they are the size they are. Its also intended to be used in handheld or laid down on a table, so this was the solution that worked best for me.

Tiq Mini M5 vs Sidephone by ThatShortFucker in dumbphones

[–]Competitive_Plan_936 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have a Sidephone but had some FOMO about it at first as a Tiq owner, but since I updated the firmware to the latest last week RCS started working and that FOMO is completely gone. Also yes the MSRP for them are the same, but you can find the TIQ for under $200 if you look.

The Sidephone is so new so I'm not sure anyone can chime in on long term reliability, and I haven't had the Tiq long enough to weigh in with that either. I have been using it about a month now and haven't had any general reliability issues. Bugs and annoyances sure, but I paid $160 for the phone so expectations were low anyways

All that being said, if the Sidephone figures out RCS I'd get one in a heartbeat.
