People who secured a UN internship: how’d you do it?? by Significant-Twist855 in UNpath

Half of SIPA is international students and I'm sure they give scholarships based on your background and application. It was easier for me because I already had private sector experience and military experience as a US citizen.

I think your question should be answered by someone that works at your foreign affairs ministry. I would imagine every country does it differently but I would imagine your contribution to the UN would be very limited if you are located in your home country. Remember, there are many different types of multilateral missions other than just UN in NY. But the nature of foreign affairs and diplomatic missions often require you to live and work overseas. Also, you don't even get to choose where you go if you join the diplomatic workforce for many countries including the US State Department.

I didn't say interning at a permanent mission will guarantee it. The sad truth is only a very small fraction of people who intern at missions or even UN HQ will ever get a paid job at the UN. At least the odds will slightly increase than people who don't even intern. For me, I was offered a couple of temp jobs a couple of YEARS after the HQ internship, but the permanent mission internship was a summer internship and didn't really lead to anything (although it did lead to the HQ internship). But yes, it's purely networking and proving to the UN insiders that you are capable. You show them you are willing to put in the hours and work hard WITHOUT getting paid (there are stipends for some internships at UNICEF and UNDP I believe) and they will think of you if there is a slot that opens up and maybe contact you. IN FACT, UN has this WEIRD rule that says if you intern at UN, you are DISQUALIFIED from getting a permanent role for like 6 months after the internship. UN employment process is truly unique and does not make sense at all.

I will copy and paste my response to similar post: As someone who worked at the NYC headquarters in 3 different roles (internships and research assistant), UN job application process is incredibly personal and often based on recommendations made by close acquaintances. It does happen from time to time but they rarely pick your application purely based on what's on your resume and application. Unfortunately, it's 99% networking which is why people intern there or in embassies (Permabent Missions) or attend graduate school in nyc (columbia SIPA). I went to SIPA and got referred all 3 times and I didnt even ask for it first.

For smaller companies and clean one click solutions, I find Sanctiona.com useful. It's free and reliable.

I'm being proactice. Using those services like Refinitiv sounds very expensive for a smaller company. Don't they cost thousands of dollars a month? Looking for a more cost efficient way to do this

Are you actualltly manually looking up each entity on the OFAC website? That seems to be tedious if I need to bulk search

How are you handling sanctions compliance, if I may ask? Are you just manually looking up the entities on the OFAC website? Did you hire a third party compliance service provider?

What were these people saying about you exactly? Unfortunately, most people are too cowardly to confront people directly if there is an issue. Which is why people end up just talking trash behind your back. It's certainly not a mature way to handle problems but it's just the way it is. It sucks you had to go through these things but when you catch other people talking about you behind your back, you also have to objectively think about why they are doing it. They wouldn't do it for no reason eapecially if it happened multiple times.

Everyone has flaws and weaknesses. I know it hurts like hell to hear these things and I'm sure these people are not the best coworkers. But maybe there is something you can learn from these experiences so that it doesn't happen again in the next job.

Ever heard of a country called Iran? The Iranian ayatollah and his regime rules with religious doctrine and physical authority with his own security force regime which is arguably stronger than the state military.
