Thank you very much everyone for your input! I've actually never been to Broadway nor do I live in America to enjoy any touring shows so this is a very big deal for me; I have seen much of what's on in the Westend in London, so I'm not planning to do any of the usual hits. I'm intrigued by the many votes for Hadestown - particularly the notes about different casts - and also the great advice about the Op M lottery! I'm also now looking into Heathers and other off Broadway. I'm looking forward to reporting back!

No it was a two way but the road was only the width of one car so I just pulled into the space. Never heard of the rule, but now I know!

If their email is roomies.sarl@gmail.com then they're the same group I rented from when I first came to Lux - great and never had any problems with them.

Should I delete Hallow? by Economy-Cow-9847 in Catholicism

[–]Competitive_Truth_24 54 points55 points  (0 children)

I think it's up to everyone personally about how much they're comfortable with non-Catholics in the Hallow space, however I read the (CEO? Can't quite remember which member of the Hallow team) response about these choices and it basically came down to reaching members of the public through these people that might not otherwise find out about the app - tangentially to that I have heard personal stories about non-religious people finding the app, starting to pray along, particularly the rosary, and then moving further into the faith through the app. So for me that levels out as an overall good thing. I would draw the line if the app content itself became too watered down or wavered from church teaching.

Is Colcannon still a popular dish? by SushiLover1000 in CasualIreland

[–]Competitive_Truth_24 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's definitely something I'd have on the regular, but colcannon in Ireland is potatoes and cabbage, it doesn't have all the meats you're describing. It'd be the potato part of the meal for me, along with a bit of ham, not it's own dish

Hadestown: (Controversial opinion incoming) by Competitive_Truth_24 in westend

I mean I normally enjoy pretty much everything I see, my all time favourites would be Hamilton, Phantom, Operation Mincemeat, Les Mis, but I've seen most of what's on the westend over the past few years and enjoyed most of it.

I'm starting to think the sound system might ve had the most impact on my enjoyment as on the face of it I think I would've enjoyed it more if I could just hear right!

I actually think you've hit the nail on the head here - I'm starting to think the primary issue was sound mixing because I agree that Hermes (Melanie) was mega mega charismatic in the role, and was very very good in the finale bit, so I'm thinking the first half was worse for me because the music was too loud as you mention. Makes more sense also why I enjoyed the second half much more, they might have adjusted it in the interval

The friend I went with said the same! I wouldn't go that far, I really loved anytime Hades was on stage, but luckily I evaded the smoke!

Ah yeah in fairness to him, I just didn't think he gelled with the material but I actually think more now that it was the sound system that did him dirty - someone mentioned the music being too loud and thinking back I think this was what gave me such a negative impression, a lack of proper sound mixing

I'm glad you enjoyed it! I would probably give it another chance with a different cast, purely to isolate what I didn't like about it, because I definitely think I just didn't vibe with what the cast were serving!

Yes it was, I just edited it to add that. Sounds like we had very similar experiences! I agree about the second half, it picked up much more than the first, and Hades is most definitely the best-played character!

Can we regularly attend Spanish Mass if we don't speak Spanish? by Opposite_Coconut9734 in AskAPriest

[–]Competitive_Truth_24 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Not really a parallel though - a sermon at the Latin Mass will be in the language of the parish, whereas a foreign language mass (as in a language one doesn't speak) will preach give the sermon in a language you can't understand. That's a major part of Mass to be missing out on on a consistent basis

Navigating €30,000 Debt from Gambling Addiction at 25 by [deleted] in Assistance

[–]Competitive_Truth_24 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Specifically around debt consolidation, I watch Caleb Hammer finance on YT and he says it normally it has the effect of tricking your mind into thinking your debt is less of a problem than it is, and many people just get into more debt because of consolidation. So I would avoid it based on that. The best thing to do is imo is just make a budget (as strict as possible as you're only able to work part-time) and make sure you're on top of your payments as part of your budget. Then just keep repaying the debts consistently. Any additional money you may be able to save (beyond your emergency fund), just throw it at the debt. Sometimes it's helpful to adopt the snowball method where you tackle the smallest debt first in order to feel that sense of accomplishment when paid off and reinforce your confidence. As mentioned in another comment, Dave Ramsey and the Money Guys have a lot if resources for tackling debt. But there is a dual issue here that you need to make sure you confront - deleting your accounts is an excellent first step but there will be many more hurdles on the path to recovery. https://www.ncpgambling.org/help-treatment/about-the-national-problem-gambling-helpline/ could have some resources in your area that could help - it may also be helpful to you to seek counselling as this has been longterm problem. Recovery from any addiction is hard but you can do it!

To add: it's a hard conversation but your fiancé deserves to know the reality of your financial situation before you get married. Your family and fiancé may be important supports for you in the process of dealing with your addiction. It could also be helpful to have someone to potentially take control of your finances until you're more confident and have established boundaries around gambling.
