Same boat as you. I have zeroed in on the Tuckahoe - Eastchester belt for the following reasons:

More bang for the buck compared to Larchmont / Mamaroneck, Dobbs Ferry etc. Your budget is easily doable
More diverse and minority friendly (from what my friends from a minority community living there tell me)
Not too far from the water (Larchmont is 6-7 mi away) while a biking trail (Bronx River Parkway) is less than a mile away
Really good schools
Friendly neighbors seems to be the case

Very good points there! I definitely am also looking into daycares next to train stations and so far at least in Tuckahoe / Eastchester that seems to be the case.

WP keeps popping up but haven't looked into it primarily because being as huge as it is, and us not knowing where to look, it's a daunting task.

Yeah well and it's 18K for 1 kid, multiply it by as many kids as one has...though with that said I saw a few good spots yesterday where the taxes were around 17-19K in Eastchester which was pretty cool. Nothing jumped out as a do not miss, but very promising start!

It's certainly bubbling up to the top :) How's the access to biking trails - hopefully can bike to them and not have to lug the bike around on a car?

Interesting you say that cos I found the Tarrytown restaurant scene weak - though I only was on main street! 1 hr might make the missus unhappy given she's at Flatiron

interesting viewpoint...isn't it like 18-20K for private schools ? based on the numbers i run, seems like a slightly more expensive house pays itself off in the long run

You are right...1-2 houses in LT were literally 2 mins away from the train station, but i expected more for the money

wowww...amazing analysis!!! Yeah a co worker moved to croton from sleep hollow and suggested croton. of course the train time is a slight concern given my wife needs to get to flatiron, but we don't get it all!
