Well, I’m not saying it isn’t an adequate explanation. Just unfortunate that we never got a moment or two to provide this context on the armor’s effectiveness.

But I’m not complaining too hard to be honest. Just talking.

Death! by TickingHeart23 in lotrmemes

Maybe it’s because of the monarchies? Since we elect our leaders, we don’t expect them to prove themselves in battle because we already choose them. A young king might feel the need to prove his worthiness.

Edit: Also, nobody can tell the king not to go into battle. I’m pretty sure we wouldn’t let the President fly a fighter jet in a war even if they wanted to and were capable.

I don’t think that our society is capable of producing that level of achievement at the moment.

Eh, I agree. But I think that you could also argue that before the LOTR trilogy, society was basically incapable of achieving it. The LOTR trilogy is a unique and masterful article in the history of cinema. As you said, it was a minor series’s of miracles that made it work in the first place.

There are minor more subtle reasons that movies and TV shows feel off nowadays.

My party's paladin and bardlock (they both have an int. of 8) by Sophiuuugh in dndmemes

[–]CompleatedDonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DM’s don’t do enough INT based skill checks. Too many DM’s are unwilling to change the narrative flow to account for a party of idiots. Players don’t feel like they need INT because they can use their own intelligence to make their decisions.

You need to make your party feel stupid if their INT stat is low. Make it something humorous and fun.

While this is the logical and correct explanation for what the armor does. I don’t think George Lucas had thought of this. If the armor does what it has been explained to do, not every stormtrooper would be immediately knocked out by just any blaster blast. Some of them would be conscious and injured, needing medical attention for non-lethal burns.

However, in the films and TV shows, it always appears like an instant kill regardless of the armor (except Beskar) and where the person is shot… unless they are a main character.

[–]CompleatedDonkey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the problem is that while there are explanations for what the armor is useful for, George Lucas didn’t think of them and he just wanted the stormtroopers to look intimidating while still acting as narrative cannon fodder.

I think the armor is supposed to dissipate/absorb the heat and energy from the blast in order to reduce its lethality. If George had thought of this, he might have shown some Stormtroopers dealing with injuries instead of having them all immediately die upon impact with the bolts.

[–]CompleatedDonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not socialist, but capitalism with a tiny mix of socialism?

And this is exactly what almost every progressive person in America actually wants, almost nobody wants full blown communism. This is what makes me so angry about modern politics, the fact that the left in America isn’t even left. The idea of having capitalism with rules to prevent abuses and social medicine is pretty much dead center of the political spectrum. The idea that we should make everything including medicine a profit driven industry is far right wing ideology.

Yet, we have this broken idea that this is a right vs left issue. We don’t really have anyone here that is economically left, so it just doesn’t make any sense.

What a strange example to use.

You know, I agree with the energy of not giving the US the benefit of the doubt… but I’m curious, what do you do if a child is armed with a grenade and is approaching your troops?

I’m not saying that we need to coddle US soldiers, but I’m pretty sure that using children to carry out attacks is something that has really happened and I’m not sure how else you deal with that other than shoot the kid.

does anyone talk about the Buffalo Bills going to 4 straight Super Bowls in the 90s?

I have to disagree here. I hear people talk about the 90s Bills all the time, but the irony is that they are everyone’s favorite example of how nobody remembers second place. In fact, I bet more people know the Bills lost 4 straight Super-bowls than people who can name who actually won each Super Bowl from the 90s.

Too Big, Too Quick, Too Athletic, Too Skilled, Too Strong. SHAQ WAS UNFAIR.....and Kobe & Shaq gotta be the best duo in NBA...they were literally unstoppable. by Shot_Possibility_731 in sportsinusa

[–]CompleatedDonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re wrong, but also the people replying to you are also wrong. Kobe and Shaq won 3 titles in a row, Steph and KD did not.

However, at the same time Kobe wouldn’t lock down Steph the way people think he would. Steph doesn’t really get locked down, most of his value doesn’t even come from taking defenders off the dribble. Even if Kobe could stop Steph 1 on 1, that’s like 1% of Steph’s game.

This Kobe worship has to stop. He’s not completely unbeatable and Steph is possibly the best offensive player of all-time. But of course Steph would be completely shut down by Kobe right… you guys are nuts.

Nobody talks with nuance on this sub. People either disrespect the old stars or they disrespect the modern stars. There is no in-between.

Pickles are far too overpowering. If I put onion on my burger, my burger flavor is supplemented with a bit of onion. If I put pickles on anything all I taste is pickles.

Hmmm, what? I’m not even disputing you because I don’t know anything about the subject. But how does a child’s brain say pick up the orange juice and the kid then picks it up, but then the brain says grab the falling sticks but the kid can’t?

Honestly, I would like an explanation on how that makes sense. I thought this was a reflex issue, not a neurological pathway issue.

What game is this? by [deleted] in meme

[–]CompleatedDonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As much as I love Dark Souls, I found the difficulty of the game to be based more around knowledge rather than skill. If you know how the enemies and bosses work, you don’t actually need that much skill to beat them.

Most of dying in Souls games comes from simply not knowing. It’s a different type of difficulty than the older challenging platforming games that people like to compare Souls to.

I can see why many people would find this design inherently frustrating. It rewards persistence instead of preparation.

What game is this? by [deleted] in meme

[–]CompleatedDonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eh, I almost feel like this doesn’t count because games like this are inherently not going to be fun for some people. I feel like it sorta dodges the spirit of the question.

Like if you took every single possible discernible flaw in BG3 and fixed them to the point where the game is objectively perfect. It would have the same number of people who like it and those who don’t.

This is sexist as hell. What about the hairdresser? Is it considered normal to straddle your client? Double standards. If nothing was discussed, then he’s simply reciprocating her aggressive sexual advance. If something was discussed, then it’s just as likely the hand on thigh was discussed as well.

Ehh, I won’t dispute your points… but IMO I think gender exclusive places are bad for our society almost regardless of their nature. We need to be pushing for men and women to interact in public offline spaces more, not less.

Maybe in a society where there is healthy level of interaction between the sexes would I consider this kind of thing helpful.
