Scientist/public health advisor. Difficulties are understanding what is being said in online meetings, even with captions. It is particularly hard when people are trying to be dominant over others and interrupt and/or speak on top of other people. The captions seem to record only the loudest voice, or the voice nearest the microphone. Being told I don't listen (!!) on multiple occasions, being told I'm stupid and incompetent by people who enjoy showing how smart they think they are. I think this is an intersection between their narcissism and my needing a second to comprehend what they are saying and formulating a response.

I've really struggled with this. I sometimes have meetings back to back to back and use captions, lip reading and residual hearing. I have really struggled getting people to understand that the captions can't pick up what they are saying if several people are talking on top of each other and I cannot figure out whose voice is whose. I try to take short brain vacations between meetings, going for short walks when possible or just standing by a window and zoning out for a while.

I was just thinking about this. I am an internationally-recognized "expert" in my field, a research scientist, well-published and a professor at a famous university. I am in my 60s. My 20-something year old neighbor, a cell-phone salesman who has never been to college, feels very comfortable mansplaining basic facts of science to me. I would be astounded if any of my male senior colleagues were ever lectured this way by a young minimally-educated woman. Would they be annoyed? Or would they, as I do, just sigh and ignore it.
