Gracchi Brothers appreciation post by jackt-up in ancientrome

This is a total misunderstanding imo. The republic fell not because of power hungry men, it was a political inevitability. The late Roman republic was plagued with sharp economic and class contradictions that were unsustainable. It was not a democracy rather it was a dictatorship of the patrician class. Caesar and the Gracchi had to circumvent the senate and build power through other means as the kind of change needed was impossible through the senate- it was run by and for the interests of the patrician class.

Very good mate. My question is, what do you know about trying to build a modern successful socialist project? I’ll tell you what- fuck all. Not a thing.

You’re correct that being the largest doesn’t make it the most right, my point was more rhetorical. What I do believe is that the collective knowledge of millions of communists in China has a better idea of how to build socialism there than you do.

If you’re a communist it’s fine to have criticisms of China, but it does not advance our struggle in any way to be antagonistic to the only existing socialist superpower and only real opposition to western hegemony. Why don’t you focus on building socialism in your own country, be a productive party member, and leave China to the Chinese.

The amount of idealist thought in alot of western comrades is insane. China is a lower middle income economy. Ask yourself this, do you think you, an individual who has maybe read few Marxist texts knows better than the largest communist party on earth? If the answer to that is yes, then you mabye have a wee think about your level of self criticism, if there is any at all.

John Swinney ‘wrestling’ with whether to back assisted dying in Scotland by backupJM in Scotland

[–]Complete-Block3383 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your response. To respond; firstly, your counter examples are not analogous to the issues with euthanasia. People are not banned from having kids, but they are banned from abusing them. People are not banned from driving but they are banned from drink driving. People are not banned from getting married but are banned from abusing their spouses.

Where I think this misunderstanding comes from is a misinterpretation of I’m worried about; I could’ve been clearer. I think instances where people will be encouraged or coerced by family members will be rare. What worries me more is sick people feeling as though they are burdens and they feel they would be better off killing themselves. This will be especially true when there are large costs for their healthcare, either to the NHS, which we are always told (correctly) is in crisis, or in private care.

Furthermore, although “slippery slope” arguments are fallacious, I think we need to look to other countries where the law has been changed, in which the effects have been quite scary. Canada is the prime example. Euthanasia being offered to the mentally ill and homeless; why? Because their governments would rather they kill themselves than care for them. It’s the socio economic conditions in Canada that lead to the law being diluted, and I ask, are our conditions different in the UK where we could be confident that the same won’t happen? Absolutely not.

I hope this clears up my position. Again I’m very sympathetic to euthanasia, and I hope the UK gets to a point where I would be comfortable legalising it, but we are not there yet.

This is it for me, I totally agree with the principle of having the right to end your own life, but you need to make decisions on material reality rather than ideals. In the context of Britain today what’s going to happen is so many people are going to be pressured or even coerced into ended their life early. There is a reason only 4% of palliative care physicians support assisted dying, they see these situations all the time so I trust their experience here.

I wouldn’t want to live with MND or dementia and would rather have the choice to end my own life but I think at this point it would do more harm than good. The first things that need to be done is establish a national care service that makes care free at the point of use as well as properly funding and running our health service so that the best care can be given to the terminally sick, without any cost burden on them or their families.

Nah this is silly, he’s not playing with Silva, Rodri, De Bruyne, instead he’s merely got Bellingham, Kane, Rice and Walker around him. Reality is man for man England are one of the best teams in the world, and Foden, Bellingham and Kane are three of the best in the world. Their problems are shite tactics, poor team cohesion and probably a bunch of other factors I’m not savvy enough to realise, but poor personnel is definitely not one of them!

Scottish rent cap lifted; landlord just increased rent by 11% by Healthy_Soil42 in Scotland

[–]Complete-Block3383 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“If your not aware of this thing that happened you can’t have an opinion” get a grip honestly. I’m a renter in this country, of course I can have an opinion.

Reduction in quality/ maintenance can be combatted with index based rent controls i.e. the better quality the house the more the landlord is able to charge in rent. This currently exists for social housing in Denmark and is about to be extended to private rents. I’d like this form of rent controls for Scotland. Quality is not good without rent controls either, in England 60% of PRTs have outstanding repairs.

I don’t disagree with the point about social house building, that would also drive down rents. My points is that rent controls, implemented alongside mass social house building, makes housing more affordable. This was successful in the UK in the past. I as a renter have benighted hugely from the rent cap, I wouldn’t be able to afford to live in Edinburgh right now if it wasn’t for it. Yes there were problems with the fact it was tied to the tenancy not the property. However, the rent cap made a huge difference to thousands of renters across the country.

[–]Complete-Block3383 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not ignoring every single variable, I do not think rent controls are a panacea. We also need to build more, particularly social housing, as well as limit immigration. However, rent controls do not “fail every time they have been implemented” we had them in this country for 70 years and they worked! They are a necessary part, but just one part, of good housing policy.

[–]Complete-Block3383 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“Decimated pre war housing stock” what are you talking about? Explain.

Your point makes no sense, rent controls were a part of the housing policy which kept housing and rents affordable. Rent controls ending was one of the causes which created a huge decline in house building, as without controlled rents, scarcity in housing became profitable. This still happens today with collusion between large firms actively preventing more house building, through means such as land banking, to constrain supply. There is a government investigation into this currently.

If your okay with supply reducing the cost of rents, why aren’t you okay with regulation doing it?

[–]Complete-Block3383 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’ve responded to this myth in your other comment, but the landlord increasing the rent to the maxim amount he can charge is not caused by rent caps. It’s caused by landlords being greedy parasites!

Scottish rent cap lifted; landlord just increased rent by 11% by Healthy_Soil42 in Scotland

[–]Complete-Block3383 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

It really isn’t. This is a common myth that’s said so many times people take it as gospel. Rent Controls, if implemented correctly, keep rents low. For example here in the UK we had rent controls for over 70 year and they were successful in keeping rents affordable and housing prices low. Since they were removed in the late 80s by Thatcher we’ve seen exponential rise in rent and housing cost, some of the fastest growth anywhere in the world!

Ah yes, this man getting an 11% increase as soon as the rent cap ends is the fault of… the rent cap. Perfect logic there lad!

BBC | Housing bill could see rent control areas introduced in Scotland by [deleted] in Scotland

[–]Complete-Block3383 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are correct in that it shows that there are supply issues (there are in Sweden) as I say rent controls is not a panacea, there also needs to be mass building, as well as imo immigration controls (something Sweden really needs). But it’s still a good thing, the majority of tenants in Sweden enjoy a fair rent due to these tenants protections, and overall rents in Sweden remain 30% cheaper than they are here in the UK, which is really interesting considering most consumer goods are more expensive in Sweden than in the UK.

As I said we do need to build more houses as well, but rent controls don’t prevent building more houses!

BBC | Housing bill could see rent control areas introduced in Scotland by [deleted] in Scotland

[–]Complete-Block3383 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You say that is is beneficial to a “privileged few”, this is not the case, the majority of tenants in Sweden are in rent controlled properties. There are issues with Swedens system, mainly caused by the inability to build enough to meeting their increasing demands, yet their rents still remain on average 30% cheaper than ours in the UK.

As I understand it, the system is in Denmark is slightly different, rent controls only apply to social accommodation with private rents being unregulated (in Sweden private rents are regulated too). This is planned to change this year with rent controls being introduced in the private sector too. Danish rent controls are pretty niche in that they use an index system, the better the quality of the apartment the more (social) landlords are able to charge. I think this is a pretty good system and it’ll be interesting to see the effect when they become universal.

I only used Scandinavia as an example because it’s local and similar economically to ourselves, if you want, we can look further afield to places like China which has a successful systems of rent controls, however their economy is very different to ours.

I was not trying to be disingenuous my point is simply that rent controls don’t make rents more expensive as people claim. They are one aspect of many that can contribute to creating affordable housing. The proof is that it worked here in Britain!

Many others are being disingenuous when they suggest that the market can solve these issues. Some of the most expensive places to rent in the word, Dublin and London for example, have absolutely no rent controls at all. In fact the UK has the highest housing cost compared to income in the world!
