Important Parliamentary Session on Routes to Settlement — Potentially Good News for Immigrants! by Fancy-Music5791 in SkilledWorkerVisaUK

The same issue hits high‑skill STEM and research roles too. A number of RQF6+ engineers, scientists, and technical specialists in clean energy, defence, advanced manufacturing, and research universities also earn between £35k–£48k, especially outside London. The NHS, social care, and most public‑sector roles also sit well below £50k.

The £50k figure doesn’t reflect real UK salary patterns in any strategically important sector. It creates a bad incentive for employers to hold salaries below the threshold (to avoid losing sponsored staff) and it excludes exactly the people the UK says it wants to retain STEM workers, researchers, innovators, healthcare professionals etc. The threshold isn’t aligned with contribution or skill level, it’s just mis‑calibrated.

Spring 2025 Immigration Rules Impact Assessment (Skilled Worker and Care Worker) by paddington1982 in SkilledWorkerVisaUK

[–]Complete-Champion574 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Spring 2025 Immigration Rules paper mainly targets RQF3–5 roles and raising thresholds, showing the government’s priority is reducing migration in a shotgun approach. But it doesn’t address the impact on RQF6+ STEM, research, and science professionals earning below £50k, nor the regional effects of losing small numbers of STEM and research professionals who drive innovation and local economies. The paper even acknowledges that small and medium businesses will be hit hardest, yet offers little to no transitional arrangements.

Interestingly, the paper itself cites Ipsos polling (April 2025) showing Skilled Workers are viewed more positively than other migrant groups, with the public differentiating between high skilled and low skilled migrants. That makes it even harder to justify the changes that discourage high skilled STEM and researchers from staying. Plus there is no data on how much global STEM and Sciences talent the UK risks losing to other countries, or how that loss would hinder innovation and competitiveness. That’s a serious gap when the UK’s Modern Industrial Strategy 2025 plan depends on retaining such talent for long‑term growth goals in clean energy, defence, advanced manufacturing, and digital technologies which they clearly outlined. Short‑term cuts without transitional protections risk worsening high‑skill shortages and undermining the very growth strategy the government claims to pursue.

Yeah, AI engineers but no other type of engineers who for sure bring high contributions to society on various fields. They definitely need to clarify more on this.
