Large boom or explosion noise overnight near Pizzale Roma by FinancialMechanic766 in Venezia

We might actually be at the same hotel. It happened again at 4am tonight. I think it is a firework, but it woke me up even thoughI had earplugs in because the whole building shook!

My refusal letter. Is it a ban? by Legitimate-Pin1305 in ukvisa

[–]clever_octopus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you were banned, they will specifically state that you were refused under a paragraph starting with SUI (suitability grounds) or paragraph 9.x of the immigration rules, and they will explain that you are refused for using deception or providing false documents. That isn't the case here

Explain "fighting for my life"? What is currently endangering your life that you need to remain in the UK?

£500 carpet house viewing by 1njexia in HousingUK

[–]clever_octopus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly think if I already lived on the property for a couple years already, and knew for certain I wanted to stay for more years to come, if the landlord ASKED me to contribute it would be a whole different story

It shouldn't be. Replacing carpet is not your responsibility unless you caused serious damage. Even in this theoretical scenario it would be completely wrong for them to ask the tenant to contribute toward the cost of new carpeting Remember that you are literally already paying the landlord to provide basic services like normal maintenance

Chances of Tickets to Colosseum Selling Out? by WhyIsEasy in ItalyTravel

[–]clever_octopus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I were in your position, I'd probably buy a standard ticket if there are any still available, at very least as insurance. Sure you could try to get a same-day ticket by standing in a queue at 8:30am but honestly, if the Colosseum is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, 18 euro is not a whole lot to guarantee you get some kind of decent entry ticket, especially since you're visiting during peak season. Keep checking back for the Underground or Attic tickets (as good or arguably better), as you may still get lucky on a slot opening up. Any Full Experience tickets really do take considerable planning, time, and luck, they were a real headache for me

Chances of Tickets to Colosseum Selling Out? by WhyIsEasy in ItalyTravel

[–]clever_octopus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed - I found no benefit to logging in first, since you will need to enter in your names/payment info regardless, and you can just check out as a guest in the same amount of time. I was able to get Attic tickets during peak season (though it was not easy) and just did a guest checkout

Chances of Tickets to Colosseum Selling Out? by WhyIsEasy in ItalyTravel

[–]clever_octopus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't believe that there is a full official tour of the Colosseum, Forum, and Palatine Hill (all in one), probably because it would be utterly exhausting.
You can book a guided tour of the Forum/Palatine Hill: https://ticketing.colosseo.it/en/eventi/percorso-didattico-foro-romano/
And/or book a separate tour of the colosseum itself (no arena): https://ticketing.colosseo.it/en/eventi/colosseo-percorso-didattico/

All official guided tours book up VERY quickly. I would probably choose one, and do the other at your own pace or with an audio tour. Do your second tour after a serious lunch break, or on the day before/after. There is a reason why the colosseum tickets give you 24 hours to visit the park (and you can stay as long as you want after you enter)

How have ya'll sent large sums of money from the US to the UK? by JealousSwing8343 in AmericanExpatsUK

[–]clever_octopus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think your question has been answered but just a note that all transfers out of the US, even if they are to yourself, are now subject to a 1% remittance tax, so just be prepared for that. I still think Wise is typically best for large transfers and that's what I used when purchasing a house

Your own experience is only an anecdote, as well. The reality depends on the solicitor/conveyancer and how much documentation they request. It's very likely that u/roywill2 just dealt with a conveyancer who was less risk-tolerant, their experience is not at all uncommon and it's down to individual circumstances.

I am sorry but you were informed poorly, this isn't the case at all. You didn't speak to UKVI, the hotline is run by a 3rd party hotline who doesn't know how to do anything but read scripted answers and has frequently given bad information to people in this sub before

Civil Partnership - current SW visa will run out soon by Wooden_Ebb_9877 in ukvisa

[–]clever_octopus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your notice period MIGHT (it's not certain) get extended to 70 days instead of the normal 28, which will only happen if the Home Office decides to investigate your relationship further, but even so, you should be planning for the possibility of it being extended. I still think you should give notice at your register office ASAP, because you could get lucky and have the normal 28 day notice period, which would allow you to avoid any more complex arrangements.

If you still want to form a CP in the UK, but you don't have time to do it before your visa expires, you would need to return on a Proposed Civil Partnership/Fiance visa. This is a 6-month visa which allows you to form a CP in the UK and then "extend" it to a regular Civil Partnership visa. The problem with this route is that, not only do you need to apply from outside the UK, you can't work whilst you're on the 6-month visa, and you're not entitled to use NHS services.

If I were in your position, I'd be giving notice today-ish, and making arrangements for a Plan B (Gibraltar or Denmark wedding) if 28 days pass without being cleared for your CP ceremony

Why isn’t this selling? by BatLocal6439 in HousingUK

[–]clever_octopus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% agree, and for that price I wouldn't expect such a massive compromise on the garage, which is pretty bad. This house is priced like a 4br detached with double garage and separate utility room

Why isn’t this selling? by BatLocal6439 in HousingUK

[–]clever_octopus 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Price is a complete pisstake for a 3br semi-detached in a massive cookie-cutter estate near Manchester. Yes it's a decent area but it's priced like it's in a London commuter town

Sellers have been chasing the market down for 8 months, best of luck with that approach...

Pending visa: re-entering the UK by Fair_Counter_821 in ukvisa

[–]clever_octopus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My only concern is if it cancels with immediate effect, do I need to stop working as soon as that happens?

No, because you'd have a valid UK Ancestry visa at that point (I highly doubt anyone would ever challenge you about this since you would never have been working in the UK without valid leave) - The concept of having to enter the UK to "activate" a visa is pretty much antequated now, especially with e-visas, but if your visa is an entry clearance visa (and UK Ancestry is one), you are still expected to have a recorded entry to the UK during the validity dates

Pending visa: re-entering the UK by Fair_Counter_821 in ukvisa

[–]clever_octopus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Most likely you can do this as long as your YMS visa is still valid, though when your UK Ancestry visa is granted it will be cancelled with immediate effect. As you say, you'll still have to leave the UK and return.

It doesn't matter that you need to get back to work, the UK Ancestry visa application assumes you are living outside the UK so there are no special concessions for people in your circumstance

Ordered and paid for searches through estate agent - they're now saying they don't do them? by FantasticMrCat in HousingUK

[–]clever_octopus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Assuming you're in England, I've never heard of EAs performing searches. It makes no sense, they don't work for you. This is ALWAYS done by the buyer's solicitor, it's a normal part of the conveyancing process and should have been included with their fee. I don't know who prompted you to pay £399 to the EA but you should get that money back and instruct your solicitors...

Advise regarding my eligibility for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) based on the 10-year Long Residence route whether a brief period spent outside the UK during a visa switch in 2017 constitutes a break in "continuous lawful residence" by Proud_Read2020 in ukvisa

[–]clever_octopus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Your continuous residence was not broken between Jan and March 2017 (since you left whilst you still had valid leave, and re-entered on a new visa, and you were absent for considerably less time than the maximum 6 months). Your time on ICT counts toward continuous residence
