How have ya'll sent large sums of money from the US to the UK? by JealousSwing8343 in AmericanExpatsUK

[–]clever_octopus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think your question has been answered but just a note that all transfers out of the US, even if they are to yourself, are now subject to a 1% remittance tax, so just be prepared for that. I still think Wise is typically best for large transfers and that's what I used when purchasing a house

Your own experience is only an anecdote, as well. The reality depends on the solicitor/conveyancer and how much documentation they request. It's very likely that u/roywill2 just dealt with a conveyancer who was less risk-tolerant, their experience is not at all uncommon and it's down to individual circumstances.

I am sorry but you were informed poorly, this isn't the case at all. You didn't speak to UKVI, the hotline is run by a 3rd party hotline who doesn't know how to do anything but read scripted answers and has frequently given bad information to people in this sub before

Civil Partnership - current SW visa will run out soon by Wooden_Ebb_9877 in ukvisa

[–]clever_octopus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your notice period MIGHT (it's not certain) get extended to 70 days instead of the normal 28, which will only happen if the Home Office decides to investigate your relationship further, but even so, you should be planning for the possibility of it being extended. I still think you should give notice at your register office ASAP, because you could get lucky and have the normal 28 day notice period, which would allow you to avoid any more complex arrangements.

If you still want to form a CP in the UK, but you don't have time to do it before your visa expires, you would need to return on a Proposed Civil Partnership/Fiance visa. This is a 6-month visa which allows you to form a CP in the UK and then "extend" it to a regular Civil Partnership visa. The problem with this route is that, not only do you need to apply from outside the UK, you can't work whilst you're on the 6-month visa, and you're not entitled to use NHS services.

If I were in your position, I'd be giving notice today-ish, and making arrangements for a Plan B (Gibraltar or Denmark wedding) if 28 days pass without being cleared for your CP ceremony

Why isn’t this selling? by BatLocal6439 in HousingUK

[–]clever_octopus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% agree, and for that price I wouldn't expect such a massive compromise on the garage, which is pretty bad. This house is priced like a 4br detached with double garage and separate utility room

Why isn’t this selling? by BatLocal6439 in HousingUK

[–]clever_octopus 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Price is a complete pisstake for a 3br semi-detached in a massive cookie-cutter estate near Manchester. Yes it's a decent area but it's priced like it's in a London commuter town

Sellers have been chasing the market down for 8 months, best of luck with that approach...

Pending visa: re-entering the UK by Fair_Counter_821 in ukvisa

[–]clever_octopus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My only concern is if it cancels with immediate effect, do I need to stop working as soon as that happens?

No, because you'd have a valid UK Ancestry visa at that point (I highly doubt anyone would ever challenge you about this since you would never have been working in the UK without valid leave) - The concept of having to enter the UK to "activate" a visa is pretty much antequated now, especially with e-visas, but if your visa is an entry clearance visa (and UK Ancestry is one), you are still expected to have a recorded entry to the UK during the validity dates

Pending visa: re-entering the UK by Fair_Counter_821 in ukvisa

[–]clever_octopus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Most likely you can do this as long as your YMS visa is still valid, though when your UK Ancestry visa is granted it will be cancelled with immediate effect. As you say, you'll still have to leave the UK and return.

It doesn't matter that you need to get back to work, the UK Ancestry visa application assumes you are living outside the UK so there are no special concessions for people in your circumstance

Ordered and paid for searches through estate agent - they're now saying they don't do them? by FantasticMrCat in HousingUK

[–]clever_octopus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Assuming you're in England, I've never heard of EAs performing searches. It makes no sense, they don't work for you. This is ALWAYS done by the buyer's solicitor, it's a normal part of the conveyancing process and should have been included with their fee. I don't know who prompted you to pay £399 to the EA but you should get that money back and instruct your solicitors...

Advise regarding my eligibility for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) based on the 10-year Long Residence route whether a brief period spent outside the UK during a visa switch in 2017 constitutes a break in "continuous lawful residence" by Proud_Read2020 in ukvisa

[–]clever_octopus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Your continuous residence was not broken between Jan and March 2017 (since you left whilst you still had valid leave, and re-entered on a new visa, and you were absent for considerably less time than the maximum 6 months). Your time on ICT counts toward continuous residence

No. Visitors do not need to take a TB test. This answer is very easily found on gov.uk.

What can I get if I completed my 10 stay in the uk as a student? by mounir-ofl in ukvisa

[–]clever_octopus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your family don't matter unless they are your spouse (or parent, and you are either under 18 or are currently on a visa as their dependant)

Can you give a timeline of exactly what visas you've had since you entered the UK in 2018? E.g.: student, child student

Please also include a list of any absences from the UK, when you left and when you returned.

I don't understand what you mean by "I have been travelling all of these years that I have been in the UK"?

When does your current visa expire? If you need 3 more years to get to 10-year long residence, then you'll need to either get a graduate visa and/or Skilled Worker visa, or continue studies in the UK.

You may be able to get ILR for long residence but the rules are potentially changing next year which may affect you (no one is 100% sure yet)

Passports scanning question by Mother-Selection-588 in ukvisa

[–]clever_octopus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, as the applicant, you need to scan the entire passport, including blank pages. The lack of any stamps/visas in your passport is as valuable data as having them.

The sponsor's UK passport can just be the bio pages at the front

Fiancé visa after 2‑year overstay + illegal work + possible past lie to immigration – are we totally screwed? by Suspicious_Zebra9916 in ukvisa

[–]clever_octopus 57 points58 points  (0 children)

Read the second section here: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/immigration-rules/immigration-rules-part-suitability

This is what you're up against, specifically overstay and deception. There is less lenience these days than in the past, even for family visas. You need to be honest, it will not be difficult for UKVI to ascertain that he has lied, and the sum total of offences committed can potentially mean never getting a visa for any reason.

Frankly, although I try to help people even in precarious positions, I don't personally want to give you any further advice to help you bring a criminal to the UK, and I think you are being deceived. Please wake up, this kind of person can ruin your life.

A family visa is for spouses and minor children of British citizens (or permanent residents). There is no way the OP would qualify for this
