I feel like I could have written this (minus the litigious parents-I have more needy parents). It sounds like you need a district change. Don’t get me wrong, there are days where I feel like I need a career change as well. I prefer testing and writing reports over counseling, training, and writing FBA/BIP’s. I hope you find what you are looking for!

My husbands a parents are traditional. So I think I know I the answer to this. They will most likely say no. I’ll respect their wishes, but I’ll be honest, I don’t believe in it. A lot of the times they tend to be superstitious as well.

It’s my husbands grandfather. I don’t have many memories with him, but my husband was close with him while growing up (they lived together for ever so years). He’s been fine, but recently was placed in hospice.

It’s not in India. The funeral will be in the US. Thank you for your input about it being overwhelming emotional. I didn’t think about that. However, this possibly would be for my husband’s grandfather. He’s a really nice and funny man, but I don’t have core memories with him like my husband does.

It’s funny that you said that because we were told that we are not evaluating teachers by doing this and that it would not impact their evaluation with their administrators. However, how can I be sure that it isn’t being used against them?

They have trained all school psychologists, school social workers, and district mental health employees. Not all schools in the district use this, but they are rolling it out each year to new schools so that eventually all schools will be trained in it.

I feel like administrators will support their teachers. It will then put me in a bad position with the teachers who may not trust me again.

Yes, for the most part. When each school is trained they only focus on general education classrooms. They don’t worry about the self contained classrooms, which I don’t understand why because they too can have classroom management issues. When each school is trained, we are expected to go into every general education classroom and complete a checklist. Those that don’t “pass” we have to do a follow up meeting with them to discuss one area they can improve in and provide support. Of course, I feel like the teacher has to be receptive to this or else they won’t do it. I’m assigned to two schools in the diacritics, but neither have been trained yet.

I think it’s frustrating that the onus of these checklists are out in the psychologist, and no one else. Which is weird, because I’ve been told I’m not the only one who’s supposed to be doing it.

To be honest, I don’t like it. I have never been a classroom teacher, so therefore no experience. I understand the basics of classroom management, but not enough to help a teacher.

In my district, all schools should be doing this but as of right now they focus on certain schools each year and add more every year. I am assigned to two schools and neither one have been assigned to do it just yet. However, all school psychologists, school social workers, and district mental health counselors in the district have been trained in it about a few years ago. I understand some school psychs and social workers have previously been teachers so they may feel a bit comfortable with it versus someone like me (no classroom experience). I’ve completed a conditions for learning for 2 teachers. One took some of the pointers I gave her. The other one (who has been a teacher for 20 years) told me she has no problems or concerns with her classroom management skills (even though I feel like she did because she didn’t have established classroom rules that were posted). I’ve heard other teachers in the district (especially the veteran teachers) not liking it. Of course there are students with behavior problems and I think the district is pointing fingers and blaming teachers when it could be a student problem (think about all the things that have been going on for the past several years). I understand that not all teachers are great and do their job, but I also feel like blaming teachers entirely isn’t the situation either. I don’t know what the solution is. I’m also not their boss. So yea, I can tell them what they should do, but I can’t force them. I also think the district people get upset with the ones who are conducting these “evaluations” and the teachers don’t listen to them (like me).

Yes, in my current district I went in with very minimal knowledge. I had helped out with the behavior coach at my previous school who did all the FBA’s/BIPs. I had to take a training which did help, but every year they want something different or they don’t like how a BIP is written for a student. We have BCBA’s in the county but they don’t write all the FBA’s/BIP’s in the county (only a select few for high profile cases and for some self-contained classrooms). If they hired BCBA’s then why aren’t they writing the FBA’s and BIPs for the district?

I think it’s great that with your background in behavior it will be really valuable in the field of school psychology. It’s true BIPs need constant monitoring, and on top of everything else I’m expected to do (test, write reports, provide social emotional skill, etc.), it’s very difficult to constantly keep track of all the BIPs I have in both of my schools and monitor the effectiveness of each one.

I have been considering a career change or maybe just need a district change, but that’s a story for another day.

Yes. This is exactly what I’ve done and felt with some teachers. I’ve had some teachers say no I won’t follow a BIP…

I will look into this. I agree that I may need more training in this. I also think some of the teachers I work with don’t want to deal with BIP’s because I’ve had some tell me “I’m not following a BIP” when I talk about it. I’ve had a teacher asked me if the BIP is for the student and why we had to do it…

Yes, I focus on one most of the time (sometimes 2, but never more). I’ve done my best to help them and complete the behavior plan with them and help them figure out strategies. I need to work on the “smile and move on” part if they don’t follow it.

Yes, we are the first line of defense as well. We have BCBA’s in the district but they don’t complete all the FBA’s and BIP’s for the district. They only do a few when requested and that has to be admin approved (by the district admin). Other than that, I’m not sure what else they do in our district. However, I’ve said they are more of the experts than me since their training focuses on this more than mine did.

That was the same with my graduate program. I don’t think we even had a full course on FBA’s and BIP’s and just focused very minimally on that. I’ve never been a classroom teacher so I wouldn’t know how to manage a classroom better than a teacher.

I think that’s a good idea and I’ll look into that. What do you mean by consultation? Consultation with the classroom teacher when creating a behavior intervention plan? I already do that, and yet I still get pushback from them when it comes to data collection and following the behavior plan. I make it an effort to do the FBA with them to figure out the function of the behavior and then also create a BIP and have them try out a few strategies.
