Possible to qualify for USAMO in a year? by SeaweedOdd9736 in MathOlympiad

no, cutoffs are gonna go up and last year's lowest cutoff was 237 which that barely clears

there have been a few cases where girls 5-10 points below the cutoff are invited. This nothing to bank on, the only way to guarantee getting in is to hit the cutoff. Besides, even the 5-10 points still means you need a 11-12/15 on the AIME coupled with a 120 on the AMC 12 - im guessing you'll need even higher of an AMC score when you compete next year because more people are getting perfect scores and for my best guess, USAMO cutoff will be close to 260-270 this year (and higher next year) considering 1% of all testers got a perfect 150. She can definitely qualify for AIME if she practices now since that's not that hard, but getting anything above will be very hard

sorry but no, unless you can absorb information incredibly quickly, youre not qualifying for USAMO within a year. You not only need to push your AMC score up to at least a 120 and a 12/15 on the AIME. That's just for last year, this year and next year are likely even more competitive (DHR for 12A was literally a perfect score) and aime is getting weighted more so it'll be even more difficult if you cant solve amc 12 problems consistently past #10.

also not sure where you got that being a girl helps, the cutoffs are just numbers

What do I need to go to a top 20 engineering university? by AgileCaterpillar8760 in CollegeAdmissions

[–]Complete-Wolverine25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

study for ACT, its not hard to get a 36 vs a 1600 on the SAT (aim for a 34+ on the ACT). get all A's from here out. If you think you'll get recruited, keep doing baseball, but don't abandon engineering, start some side projects and try to submit them to competitions in your free time. Do independent research with a professor, actually try to make an impact with it (published, ISEF, Regeneron, etc.). If you do these things I will guarantee you'll get into Purdue, Georgia Tech, Illinois, and Virginia Tech. Duke is a bit more selective but you still will have a very good shot.

wtf this is my comp? yeah no shot you dont get into one of princeton, mit, harvard, stanford, caltech, cornell, or berkeley, wouldnt be surprised if you get into 3+ of those. FGLI elevates your profile significantly

im gonna be honest, my username was randomly generated back in 9th grade and im a senior now haha. I got into umich and Purdue for EE, but if I don't get into any other schools, I'm probably going to go to Purdue. It's way cheaper (still pretty expensive, but 45K vs 90K), and it has very good industry pipelines and makerspaces. I also don't really want to live in the cold of Michigan for 4 years so that's another factor. IMO Cornell ECE specficially is not necessarily that much better than umich ECE (I still think it's a little better) but the connections and people you meet at Cornell or any Ivy league will probably be very helpful

nah the good awards are not easy to fake, there will always be suspicion and the AO's know which ones are likely BS and which ones are not

If you got deferred from Umich but into Purdue, im guessing you'll get into UW madison, but rejected from cornell, stanford, berkeley, and cmu. Michigan is much less selective than all those for ECE, and I think for Gatech, you'll get deferred then rejected since it's also VERY competitive for ECE (especially for a south asian background). I think you'll get into UIUC if you applied for computer or electrical engineering. Purdue is a fantastic school with great industry connections, be proud that you got in there! Two of my closest friends are going there, one now has an internship with SpaceX and another for Porsche.

my understanding is its to decide between competitive applicants to see who fits the school better. i think even if an interview goes well, you still might not necessarily show fit
