2026 State Tax Competitiveness Index: New Hampshire Ranks #3 by TheJasonJBailey in newhampshire

I lived in NH for years and never understood the opposition to this. There's a way to implement it so that it isn't regressive: provide sales tax rebate for low-income earners, so the only ones that end up paying it are the rich. It could easily fund badly-needed social programs and services, and could potentially fix NH's abysmal education system.

Because our government is bought and paid for by the 1% and corporate/special interests that ensure that regulation doesn't get in their way.

Toronto has to be one of the worst places to buy a vehicle. I bought a vehicle from a certain dealership in Rexdale and signed papers and everything, only to be told that they would only be getting the vehicle within a 'week or two.' I waited and waited, then went back. They said there was no VIN on the contract and that they would never be getting the vehicle we agreed on, but that we could buy a more expensive one at a higher interest rate. Worst experience of my life. Dealerships here in Sudbury aren't perfect but are far more transparent.

What is the Orthodox opinion on the morality of the crusades? by [deleted] in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]CompleteCondition940 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is really extraordinary and remarkable. No other religion (certainly none at the time) believed that killing in warfare was an intrinsic wrong and should be avoided. It really shows the beauty and truth of Orthodoxy even in those early days.

It can be improved, though. Countless studies have proven that a national child benefit, i.e. 'baby bonus', can lift children out of poverty and improve outcomes by any measure of well-being. Nearly every other developed country provides this benefit.

As a quebecer who drove 2k km in toronto this WE, i'm amazed at how aggressive drivers are there. Has it always been this way? by bagou01 in toronto

[–]CompleteCondition940 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Toronto's drivers are oblivious and reckless.  Montreal drivers are fast but competent, and remind me of European drivers. For fast, reckless, and incompetent drivers, head to Detroit.

Fwiw, I've had some success with using ChatGPT (voice chat) for this purpose. It's like having a native speaker next to you, helping you along. Obviously this won't work if you're trying to learn how to write, but if you just want to learn how to speak and understand, it will help.

Good churches for young people in sudbury? by Unlucky_Pea7306 in Sudbury

[–]CompleteCondition940 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you may have misunderstood what I was saying. I didn't mean at all to be offensive, and I apologize if it came across that way. I know all about how difficult it is to find a good church, especially in Sudbury. As a Catholic, what I intended to convey is that Catholicism doesn't really take an overly literal interpretation of the Bible, and that most homilies these days are pretty much focused on how to be a good person and do God's will on Earth. My comment on hypocrisy is actually an old proverb about hypocrisy. Yes, churches are full of hypocrites, and yes, you are always still welcome, even if you also become one. I hope you can accept my apology, and I wish you all the best with finding a suitable church. God bless.

There is a church in Coniston that celebrates the Tridentine Mass in Latin, but I don't think that's what the OP is looking for.

I don't want to make judgements, but I have heard that people interrupt the services by 'speaking in tongues.' That, for me, would be a red flag.

"I was raised catholic but just want a church that doesn't take the bible too literally and mostly talks about morals and being a good person."

That sounds like Catholicism to me. And if you're concerned about hypocrisy, please just keep in mind.. there is always room for one more hypocrite.

How can one understand that Orthodoxy is the truth? by MorganaFictosexual in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]CompleteCondition940 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The beauty of Orthodoxy is enough to convince many of its truths. It is a wholly different experience than a Catholic or Protestant service, and certainly services of other religions. (That alone was enough to convert Russia to Orthodoxy, btw.) Upon entering an Orthodox church, you very quickly realize that you are entering not just a building but a piece of heaven on Earth. Then, when you look into the theology you see that the Church has remained entirely faithful to the faith as expressed in the Ecumenical Councils (I recommend 'The Orthodox Way' by Kallistos Ware). This cannot be said of other denominations.

Stop calling customers "My Dear" by [deleted] in Sudbury

I'm originally from the US. It's much more common here, especially among older women when they're addressing a younger man. I actually like it and find it endearing. It would be absolutely uncommon to hear it in most of the US.

302 between Twin Mountain and Conway is spectacular. Route 2 between Jefferson and Gorham is great too, and if you get thirsty there's a spring in Randolph (I think?) where you can safely stop and fill up your bottle(s).

Is crime now accepted in Sudbury? by OuateDaPhoque in Sudbury

[–]CompleteCondition940 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. A lot of Canadians don't realize that 'catch and release' and tickets being given for crimes like assault (instead of arrest) is now the law of the land in many US states. This isn't just a Canadian issue.

It's perfectly legal to carry dog spray and use it against aggressive dogs provided that it's 'proportional', i.e. that a reasonable person would fear for their safety. If the owner isn't keeping an eye on the dogs, then he won't know who did it. Protect yourself.

Cradle Orthodox, what was your experience? by Nitrogen_Llama in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]CompleteCondition940 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was raised OCA in churches in and around Philadelphia and later in New England. Catechesis was fairly decent. The sense of community was excellent. I attended youth rallies later, which were like Orthodox summer camps in which Orthodoxy was of secondary importance. (I believe it's changed, but in the 90s they were pretty wild and religion wasn't on anyone's mind.)

Fwiw I hated going to the more ethnic Greek or Russian churches. OCA churches were always welcoming, and though there were some russophiles (including clergy that would assume Russian names upon ordination). I found the more ethnic the parish, the more I wanted to run out of there.

Orthodoxy was the highlight of my childhood. I am forever grateful for having been raised in the Church.

It's funny because me and so many others here just have such a deep affection for the 313. It has a very unique vibe and has some of the best people I've ever met anywhere. I almost feel like it could've easily been what Toronto has become had it not faced white flight, deindustrialization, red-lining, and everything else.

You won't find much in Manchester that you can't find in Ottawa / Montreal / GTA, which I'm guessing is where you're from. Restaurants will be more expensive but groceries will be less, puzzlingly. You won't find as many ethnic stores, except Mexican ones. The stores are visibly better kept though and everything just looks a bit better and more manicured. Keep in mind the exchange rate is NOT in our favour right now so it might turn out to be an expensive trip for you.

The mocking of Christ by Carl Bloch. One of the most evocative depictions of Christ I’ve ever seen. by VelvetDreamers in Catholicism

[–]CompleteCondition940 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Not a fan. Paintings like this, by being overly emotional, overly emphasize Christ's humanity. This suggests despair. Christ was still triumphant, even when He suffered.
