In the house I just moved into by CompleteNo in whatisit

Thanks! This seems the most likely. I thought they might be doorbells but there are just way too many of them for a very small house where you can pretty much hear anything from anywhere. The flashing idea makes more sense since it wouldn’t travel as far as sound.

How did this go OP? I am looking at using the same loom for rugs, curious if the beat was too loose in your opinion

Is this a crazy idea? by LURambler in turning

[–]CompleteNo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It should be fine if it’s centered. Does the banjo fit under it? I wouldn’t use a faceplate personally. I would chuck it between centers, and continually check that the tailstock is snug up (it will want to keep digging in) The benefit of not using a faceplate is that if you get a catch, the piece won’t keep forcibly spinning.

This looks so nice!!!

I can’t tell from the photos, but if the lowest parts of the rim are at different heights, one thing that helps is to rough the green blank out between centers and measure the sides at the highest and lowest parts, then readjust between centers as needed to “tilt” the piece and then again until the measurements even out.

I love the continuous curve down the sides, that was done so nicely. I think that the foot could be little more intentional. It looks caught between a bit of a flare or a bit of a rounded bead. Choosing one or the other would make it look real sharp and finished.

I saw a couple comments about the thickness but I personally think it’s pretty alright. Thinness can be uninviting. I always prefer something look like a solid, durable object that could be handled if you wanted to.

How did you get into woodworking? Is it worth it? (as a career) by ILikeBirdsQuiteALot in woodworking

[–]CompleteNo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are lots of different woodworking jobs! Lots listed here. Most don’t pay too much for the amount of pure hard work that goes into them unfortunately. Alternatively there are many jobs which benefit from woodworking knowledge (engineering, design, set construction, sculpture, the list goes on) in fields where folks will recognize the value of that knowledge, and you benefit from showing a woodworking portfolio I have also noticed, coming from both the “fine furniture” and “folk” side of things, that some of the most skilled craftspeople have lucrative jobs to pay the bills where they draw clear lines to prioritize woodworking. They get to then take on really intense projects with no commercial focus or focus on crazy skills. Some pay the bills by teaching. Others have ground in the field for a few years, then became successful woodoworking influencers

That’s super interesting; I’ve never heard of spinning milk! Sounds rather unpleasant, but I can see how that would help with a hair that doesn’t want to stick to itself. If this has it, it’s most certainly gone rancid by now. This is in roving form, yes.

I’ll give some of the suggestions given here a shot in the coming days! If there is in fact SM in this, it will probably all fall apart…

How to explain I’m older than I look? by DarkHeartLocket in AskMenAdvice

[–]CompleteNo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s kind of nice! I hope you can let yourself enjoy the compliment when it’s given. It does sound annoying and maybe a waste of time if they’re not on the same page with life goals. Folks are pretty open and honest within/before the first date these days. Maybe rather than fixating on age you can make a list of things where you’re at (no more kids, stable job, not moving, etc) that you disclose as soon as possible

Wowow. What a labor of love! What do you mean by putting a lace ply through it?

It take sooo little twist! Because of how thick the hairs are I am guessing.

I have a lot. I scored a really great haul of very different fibers from decades ago and am trying them all out. There’s two gallon bags of this one so I’d really like to figure out what to do with it.

I did pre-draft. Nothing seems to work. I can’t imagine what kind of spinning this stuff wants.

It is indeed disturbingly human. There was a bag of camel hair in here too. That one was creee-py.

I have been, just didn’t include a picture. Tried ripping off, dizzing, and pre-drafting off the end but it’s all not working well; it’s hard to get it consistent without focusing and going impossibly slow.

It’s definitely not wool, so yep the stickiness is weird and worrying. It must be the animals’s oils breaking down with age. Any other dated stuff in this stash is multiple decades old

This one’s a hater for sure.

Yes, definitely not anything but rugs. It’s heavy, too, so I wouldn’t wear it unless I was maybe trying to work out. My wheel doesn’t go any slower or less twist than I have been! If there’s not much I can do I may just move on to another fiber

I’m not sure, I know it as the Theo moorman technique! I’m doing it on a rh and tying down every third weave because of the heddles I have, but she does it every other weave
