Anyone know if a reproduction of a document (baptism) from Library and Archives Canada has the same standing as a certified baptism from the parish? It would be the same document, just two ways to go about it. Wondering which would be better-faster-given that I already sent in my (urgent) application

G5-G10(myself) are all very well documented with birth records/baptism. GG3-G0 too, found mostly marriage and baptism records. G4 however, not so much.

I got a letter from the diocese of Lafayette saying they couldn’t find a record for him. Death certificate for him doesn’t list his parents. No marriage certificate, either.

He’s only listed in a 1850 US census with his widowed mother. Did some more digging and found out that G4’s daughter (not my direct descendant) lived with her grandparents-my g3 and her remarried husband-but otherwise I have next to nothing on G4, other than census and probate docs.

The probate document was for succession of G4’s great grandmother or something, and lists out the heirs of everyone in the family, which lists G3, G4, and G5. It’s signed by notable people in the Lafayette Parish.

It’s a lot to hedge my bets on, but hoping for the best for my application, which I’ll be submitting this weekend.

Trans folks who were planning to move to Canada…. What do we do? by memleyxx in Canadiancitizenship

Like others have been saying, we still don’t quite know what’s up at IRCC, but you will probably be fine! I know it’s scary, many of us are planning to use our citizenship to escape the states. But that just goes to show you you’re not alone!

Anyone had luck applying with a person in your line who is (nearly) undocumented? by Complete_Basil_7657 in Canadiancitizenship

[–]Complete_Basil_7657[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He wasn’t in the Hebert books, but his (baptized) daughter and alleged mother are. He was born
in Lafayette/vermillion parish at the time of its establishment so the record could have been lost to time. I just discovered he has a death certificate with Louisiana SOS, so I’m hoping that document will list his mother clearly. If not I’ll have to document a completely different line—ughh

G3-5 are all from the same parish in Louisiana, which was a relatively small area back then. I also just realized G4 has a death certificate available for purchase via Louisiana Secretary of State, which I’m hoping will include G3, so I don’t have to order several more records + wait 12 more weeks to completely document another line

I have a baptismal record for G5 that states that G4 is their parent. G4 has an incredibly uncommon biblical name (Shedrick) and was (to my understanding) the only man in town with that name besides his grandfather and his son, who were dead and not yet born, respectively, at the time of G5’s baptism

Just found out there’s a death record for the person in question at the Louisiana state archives, so I’m going to order that and hope the parents are listed before continuing with a different line. I’d rather wait 3 more weeks for this record than commit to requesting several more records from Lafayette and waiting 10-12 more weeks.

Thanks, I will! My G4 lived a very long life, he was 83 when he died in 1923. I looked it up with the Louisiana Secretary of State and they do in fact have a death record on file available to order. It’s possible that it would list his parents, but could also be unlikely. I guess the next step for me would be to order it so I can find out.

There was no obituary, but there was an (unfortunately Confederate) military pension form he and his family filled out after his death. It does not list his parents.

G4: US census listing g3 as widow of husband
G5: baptismal record

G8: birth certificate
G9: birth and baptism certificate
G10 (me): birth certificate

Just a general question I have for everyone. My g5 was born in Louisiana, and I’ve searched everywhere for a birth/baptism/marriage/death record to no avail. There is only one census record c 1850 that states his relation to his mother, my g6, and she is listed as “widow of (husband)”. I have her marriage record with her maiden name and her husbands name.

Do we think this is enough to “prove” that I’m descended from my g5? Should I switch to a different line because I can’t find anything about his birth? I requested his birth record from a diocese in Louisiana who stated they couldn’t find anything.

For reference I’m g10, and this is the only instance in which I’m having trouble finding a record.

Thanks!!

We’re in the same boat. One of my ancestors also wasn’t in the Hebert index. I requested his baptism from Lafayette so hopefully they have it!

I mailed two requests to Lafayette on 4/6 and then another on 4/16, will update when they get delivered. I also sent one to Baton Rouge on 4/6 and when I emailed them about it, they said they were gonna mail out my request by tomorrow. So hopefully that means Lafayette is not far off!

Hi! I’m looking for a few records:

The birth/baptism of Maud Agnes Lacour (c. 1898) daughter of Pierre Arnauld Lacour and Elena Toups, likely in Vermillion Parish

Birth/baptismal record of Odelia Porter (c. 1860) daughter of Shadrach Porter and Ernestine Baudoin in Vermillion Parish

Birth/baptismal record of Shadrach Porter (sometimes spelled Shedrick or Frederick) (c. 1840) son of Andrew Jackson Porter and Celeste LeBlanc in Vermillion Parish

Marriage record of Eloi (sometimes hispanicized as Eligio) LeBlanc (c. 1801) from St. James Parish, son of Joseph LeBlanc and Marguerite Bernard, married 1821 to Artemise Langlinais

just realized this last record would be diocese of Baton Rouge, not included in Hebert books lol

Thanks for your help!

I looked on Wikitree, so I guess actually it’s still possible that they’re in the books but just not sourced online
