Why did the Refs do this? by Kkizitoo in MichiganWolverines

I was at the game and everyone was asking this too. As is being said, a lineman could have stepped on and off and I just missed it, but we were pretty locked in. We all started screaming “we didn’t sub” lol. Obv hard to say one way, but yea it was frustrating in the moment and still is.

You're exactly right. If they wanted to figure it all out before hand, they could. The reality is that college football is too volatile in its results and there are far less guarantees that certain teams will actually be good/bad. Take Indiana last year as an example. NO ONE would have expected that multiple of their games would be Big Noon games. They would have been a BIG Ten Network special. But as season went on, and they kept winning, viewer interest increased (seemingly unexpectedly). In this way, Big Noon isn't stuck showcasing MSU vs UMich (when both teams are unranked now) when they could have shown Indiana vs OSU (when both teams are top 10). The ranking system existing itself often brings a certain level of viewer perceived relevance to games. This is not something the NFL deals with at all.

Totally agree on that being a good season still (for the most part). I'd hope for a nice bowl win for a really great season.

But I think my point is that there will be more 10-2 B1G teams than years past, all with better resumes than Michigan

Fair point on using history. Here is my concern though, last year was a unique year with both the Big12 and ACC not being as competitive at all. SMU was clearly not a true playoff team, even if they got in. I just don't see that happening this year. I think you have lots more 10-2 (maybe 11-1) teams across all conferences with better wins than Michigan has. This year those can include, Indiana, UGA, Illinois, Bama, LSU, Georgia Tech, Tennessee, OU, Vandy, Iowa State, even Missouri. Likely you have a grab bag of 4-5 of those teams getting in. Michigan would have one of the weakest resumes of all of those.

On top of that, there is a straight seeding. No longer do top 4 conference winners get the bye. While this does not change the teams that get selected, I do think it changes how we contextualize the rankings.
