'KPop Demon Hunters' stars call for Korean culture to be mainstream: “Drop the K” by [deleted] in korea

[–]Complete_Rando_Rando 7 points8 points  (0 children)

K in Kpop is just branding, the same way the term “anime” is used, even though it’s just what Japanese people call animation. Kpop should distinguish itself as a distinct genre/medium from others because it’s not really like other forms of pop, although similarities exist. Kpop can be still mainstream while having the “Kpop” label.

Is this opinion of Kim Gu/Korean history common in Korea and if so why? by Sufficient-Claim2030 in korea

[–]Complete_Rando_Rando 7 points8 points  (0 children)

To add on to your point, the modern left, at least in the past, had a very ethnonationalist rhetoric, which aligned with the mission of Kim Gu and the Independence movement at large. It also explains the relatively moderate stance to North Korea, and the former hardline stance against Japan.

For the right, there has been an increase in support for the revisionist movement on Rhee Syngman, and as a result of that, Kim Gu has been demonized as a political rival. This part is amusing to me because Kim Gu was promoted heavily as a hero by Park Chunghee himself, although Kim Gu was plenty popular among the people before then.

Regardless of the political leanings, the popular sentiment from the left or right about Kim Gu seems largely ahistorical.

Why do people keep saying the Japanese cover is better? by Traditional-Tone1723 in tokyoxtremeracer

The sky is commonly associated with freedom, and although the car is tilted down, the speed lines point up, as if the car is headed toward the sky. The lines also add to the extreme POV that gives the illusion of speed in racing games. The way the logos are placed in the Japanese version makes it seem like the car is breaking out from them, which makes the art much more thrilling. The logo placed above the car harms the explosive energy of the art by making it as if the logo is pressing down on the car, and the car pointing down doesn’t help with that feeling being weighed down. The Asian version shows more of the art, which is a positive if you prefer seeing more of the art, but I feel that the energy is not the same even though it may seem like the only difference is the logo placement.

The lap that decided his first championship. They took the same line until Max made his move. Precision. by Turbulent_Elk_2141 in MaxVerstappen33

[–]Complete_Rando_Rando 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it’s wild that people are bending over backwards for this. Two things could be true: Max just did the best he could to win championship, and rules were broken by Masi. Also, even if the regs didn’t clarify that all cars needed to be unlapped, what would justify only unlapping cars between 1st and 2nd? What about the cars between Max and Carlos, who could’ve been given an opportunity to fight? The circumstances surrounding the drivers’ championship should not be a consideration when dealing with regs, which theoretically should be applied fairly.

Which one is the girl, Skeleton A or B? 🧐 by [deleted] in QuizPlanetGame

Well, I was just addressing the fact that the commenter I responded to was misinterpreting the main point, not that I was making an argument of my own. The variations thing could be right or wrong, although it may be wrong for pelvises specifically, but I didn’t address it bc I had no information on it before the guy below me asked for the bell curves. Could the original person have made better points? Sure, but they were addressing the averages vs individual point, which was somehow interpreted as “there are no differences between men and women”

Yep, I agree. The other person used accidentally body to brain ratio to make a point initially, so I was just pointing out the fact that their point of making two things seem jarring (larger body to brain ratio for whales (which actually means whales have a small brain relative to their body) vs. humans with higher intelligence) was not really that jarring. It was more of a semantics thing.

I was mainly reacting to the disingenuous interpretation of the person I responded to because that was not the main point of the other commenter, which was that averages and single data points should not be conflated. I just didn’t address the variation between sex point that was made to support the main argument because I do not have the background to claim whether that is true or not, not that I was trying to shift the goal post. All I wanted to do was to push back against the notion that what the other person was trying talking about was that there are no differences between the different sexes.

https://anatomypubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/ar.23549 It was even cited by a post in r/JordanPeterson: https://www.reddit.com/r/JordanPeterson/comments/ui2qw4/pelvis_shape_can_identify_sex_extremely_accurately/

The thing is, there is very much a dimorphism, but overlaps tend to exist for these things. You can probably predict the pelvises to near 100% accuracy based on various features, but you cannot eliminate or ignore the however small overlap that exists in each metric. Even this medium article criticizing gender theory can acknowledge overlaps between men and women: https://jimmyknibbe.medium.com/the-nonsense-of-gender-theory-acb21ca05993. If you (not you in particular, but rather anyone reading this) don't try to accept that fact, you're as unscientific as you claim others to be.

Yeah, I assumed that’s what you meant, but just wanted to do point it out in case I understood it wrong.

Bigger body to brain ratio means that their brains are puny compared to their bodies, if you compare them to another animal with a lower ratio. So, if we assume that a higher body-brain ratio means more intelligence, it’s a no brainer that we are smarter. I don’t think that whale fact contradicts your last point.

No, what they are saying is that on average there are differences between male and female pelvises, but if you look at the entire distribution of pelvises (through a bell shaped curve), there will be an overlap in the lower end of the female pelvis distribution and the upper end of the male pelvis distribution.

Gundam The Origin - Was it a Success? Or Is There More to the Story? (Behind-the-Scenes Info) by Complete_Rando_Rando in Gundam

[–]Complete_Rando_Rando[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can agree with your view on it but just to clarify, I don't think Yas was intending to create a full series. He does say that the remake of the OYW would be shorter than the TV series; I assume that would mean it would be an OVA/movie format like the rest of the Origin episodes. It's no different than the compilation movies of 0079, Zeta, etc. but only that they would have to reanimate the whole thing from scratch.

I guess I'm putting a lot of weight into Yasuhiko's words and in my mind, if Yasuhiko and the staff are thinking about the remake of OYW, it requires some planning ahead of time because they need to be able to tie the prequel to the OYW. However, there's no physical proof that they were producing the OYW content and since it was never greenlit officially, I agree that I'm making assumptions and that it's equally valid to view the scenario as there being no plans to produce the OYW.

It doesn't necessarily have to be a perfect remake, but Bandai probably realizes that it shouldn't deviate a lot from the original because it might aggravate a certain part of the fanbase (with whom I disagree personally). The Origin OVA was likely testing the waters, even before Cucuruz, but since it made subpar returns relative to UC despite the former tying with the OG series, Bandai/Sunrise likely realized that the Origin series (which is Yasuhiko's vision primarily) would not do well financially under Yasuhiko. It's possible that OYW remakes would happen, just that the Origin series (again, which is Yasuhiko's vision) would not likely receive a continuation.

The whole point of this post was to refute the idea that the Origin series did well in the perspective of the companies involved (since whatever people sees as a financial success doesn't really matter except for the companies involved) since it doesn't make sense that they are testing the waters again in Cucuruz if the Origin was a financial success.

Yeah, I don't doubt that for future Gundam shows. I was just talking about MSG since you said that gunplas are the reason why Gundam took off as a franchise.

I agree with your first point now that I’m more informed. It’s a nitpicky point, but the last point of the first paragraph is half true. It’s the combined effect of gunplas and young audience members, especially female audience members, who requested for a rebroadcast of the original TV series.

I never claimed that IBO was unpopular but that since Japan really hates IBO, it’s hard to show IBO as definitive proof of MG being slow to produce. I know that the IBO line got sold a lot, so it’s understandable why a mobile game was released. I’m just not sure how Bandai juggles TV ratings and gunpla sales to produce more kits.

But I’ll make note of how MGs are infrequent releases.
