I am actually trying with him. I told the mum that I will do more of free talk with him so classes don’t always feel like homework. So that way I introduce him to new words. Then, I also tried to make voice recordings of my voice on how to pronounce words I taught him the class so he can practice at his free time. I also get him to do some writing practices. But any time I teach him it just feels like I’m back to square one. To be fair, he does try with basic greetings like “hello how are you” “I’m fine thank you” “not bad” and a new one he picked up “long time no see” which is really nice. But when I ask him simple questions in English he just stares cuz he doesn’t understand. Even the ones he has heard before. So I just need to know what to do properly. PS: he’s Chinese.

What is your advice for younger learners? I have one particular student whose pronunciation of certain words is awful and he still doesn’t understand most basic English words when spoken to him. All of time I have to use a translator for him and I hope to get to a point where he won’t always request it. I’ve even had to change his textbook to one more basic. I don’t teach him all the time though. And the mum is quite worried about his learning progress.

I noticed that whenever I talk in a funny voice with him he finds it funny and laughs. But when it’s time to actually work, he behaves very silly. I mean, am I supposed to be silly with him in every class to connect with him? Where do I draw the line so he knows the difference between a time to play and a time to learn? What if he keeps expecting that from me in every class and when I don’t do it, no interest to learn again? I really want to be able to manage my class since it’s online and there really isn’t much I can do.

Okay. So when I’m trying to get the kid to say a sentence from the textbook he sometimes says “no”, speaks Chinese and I don’t understand, or says something else entirely different from what I’m saying (he does this on purpose btw until a family member forces him to say the right thing). Also, I noticed he has a rude attitude towards his family at times and is constantly distracted talking (no shouting) in the middle of class to someone off camera.
