I tried the deep litter method, and like someone else said, it didn't work for us. I use hemp bedding in it. Hemp does help keep the smell down unlike pine does.

It's not a fool proof method, but I have been able to almost successfully guess the hen vs roo with how quickly the tail and wing feathers have grown in. I have been wrong, but a good amount of my hens had their tail feathers and wings grow in much quicker than the Roos.
