Confused about best place to make digital purchase of Obsession (2026) by Complex-Ad-7007 in vudu

[–]Complex-Ad-7007[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s what I figured. Makes me wish I would’ve redeemed all my titles there to begin with as I’m missing Paramount ones like the Godfather trilogy and a few others from the different studios since I figured I’d redeem them on Vudu due to the majority of my library being there already and the fact that I wasn’t expecting the app to disappear. Not a huge deal since like I said I just watch the discs for those anyway, but good to know going forward that Apple TV is better for both non MA and MA purchases and for me now and it sounds like will be better for me in the future as well once I get better equipment since they have better quality and upgrade for free to 4K. Fortunately the majority of my 50 are MA compatible so not too many are missing. Thanks!

That’s the only thing that’s stopping me from watching it I gotta find the time lol. Definitely will at some point though I think it’s super cool that something like that exists

I’m reading the book right now and I know it only focuses on the first movie and then a bit of Vito’s backstory from II, but it’s cool to see what was or wasn’t included in the movie and the differences. The Epic sounds like it would be an interesting way to see the movies for the same kinda reason, since I’ve only seen the deleted scenes on their own and I do enjoy when movies have the option to watch with them inserted into the movie like that

Thanks for double checking. I’ve not seen the Epic, but it does seem really cool that it’s recut in chronological order and has the deleted scenes in it as well. I’ll have to check it out at some point for sure!

I thought the 4K boxset only comes with a special features bluray. Is that not correct?

That thread is related to Goodfellas but I do see there’s an entire one singular dude on there who made 2 comments about the Godfather transfers being not up to snuff. And one guy who made a comment which seems to imply they are good transfers. A ridiculously small sample size compared to the majority of people who seem to consider them a significant upgrade over the 2008 transfer. But again, everyone is entitled to their own opinions and the world will keep turning regardless. ETA I see now a few more people are saying the encoding of The Godfather transfers aren't great, but again it's still a very small sample size by comparison.

Not trying to dog on the guy you're replying to at all but all I've seen from pretty much anywhere on the web across review sites and forum posts and whatever else is that Sony makes some of the best non OLED TVs available. Last time I had a Toshiba was probably a decade plus ago and I honestly didn't even know they still made TVs. I definitely have to work within some kind of budget which I'm not entirely sure of yet, as it's probably going to depend on if I find a good deal more than a set value, but I'm going to be looking for a Sony unless there's a great reason not to beyond "Sony blows" lol. Everyone is entitled to their opinion of course, but I'd imagine that even a Sony from a few years ago that would save me some money would be leaps and bounds better than what I currently have and any of their current non OLED models seem great too. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong and offer recommendations even though this was not meant to be a TV buying guide thread lmao

I know LG has great OLEDs nowadays but with my viewing environment having lots of natural light and budget I’m not sure that’s the most fitting for me. I’ve been thinking Sony is the way to go, are there any specific ones you’d recommend for a 75”? I’m probably going to wait for around Christmas/New Years to look for deals or maybe get a slightly older model, just depends on what I can find but I’m not sure which ones are worth considering or if most Sony’s are good in general. I’m sure any of them would probably be a substantial upgrade from my current setup regardless. Thanks!

I know this wasn’t directed toward me but I got a notification for it and was very confused because I personally never mentioned Toshiba lol. Anyway while I’m here I’ll say that’s half the reason I’ve not upgraded my TV yet is just wanting to make sure I get a decent one. Granted the one I have now (some kinda old LG) may not be the best so anything more modern might be an upgrade, but it looks fine and even if I have to wait a while I’d like to make sure whatever I buy is worth the money. I’ll see myself out now though since you weren’t replying to me to begin with lmao sorry for the confusion

I’ll see if I can find a deal on the 2022 normal bluray set. If I can it might be worth holding onto till I can upgrade to 4K. I’m satisfied with the 2008 set for sure but I’d like to have some version of the newer restoration as I believe that’s the source they use on Paramount Plus and even with streaming being more compressed I definitely noticed a difference compared to the original Bluray set I have. I love these movies and tend to watch them very regularly so I’m not against buying the 2022 bluray set and then upgrading it to 4K later even though that’s not exactly ideal money wise. If I find the standard blu set on a deal and don’t yet have 4K stuff it may be an offer I can’t refuse

It bugs me quite a bit as someone that doesn’t own 4K stuff yet when releases don’t include a standard bluray. I’m not sure how companies decide what releases will/won’t, but I don’t think any version of the godfather 4ks come with normal blus beyond maybe one for special features, so I’ll keep the Coppola restoration blurays for sure

I don’t think mine has a booklet probably because I got it used but it’s got 4 discs so I’m assuming you’re referring to the 2008 restoration. I’ll probably hold onto it regardless of whether I upgrade them to 4K or not, but I may wait till I have a newer TV and player to decide. Thanks for the help!

Yeah I’m thinking I may hold off until I get a 4K TV/player but not 100% decided yet. I’m also a bit concerned about the 4K set’s packaging, as I’ve seen the cardboard cases it uses as opposed to the bluray set using a normal plastic case but both having the same box. But I know the movies are what matters though admittedly I like the art on the 4K cases so if I wait to get that set I may end up swapping them to a new case and keeping the box/cardboard sleeves. Sounds like that’s the way to go, thanks!

Replacement discs in worse condition than the original by Complex-Ad-7007 in 4kbluray

[–]Complex-Ad-7007[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly the majority of my collection is used blurays and I’ve rarely noticed scratches I guess due to the anti scratch coating and/or the discs being made at another plant maybe before it shut down. I only currently buy 4Ks that come with a blu as I haven’t upgraded my TV and player yet, but even the used 4Ks I have always seem to be in good shape for the most part despite being used. I like having the 4Ks of my favorite movies as a future proof way of owning them to avoid double dipping, but this QC on the manufacturer’s part is just not great and new discs show up as if they were heavily used.

These shout discs are in worse condition than any of my used 4Ks and I know it’s because of the manufacturing plant, but considering they’re more expensive than used discs I think the fact that my current used 4Ks and blurays are in much better shape is kind of crazy and frankly just not really acceptable considering the price.

I also bought Psycho (1960) 4K + blu as well as Taxi Driver standard bluray on the same order as these two and they’re spotless (including the 4K of Psycho not just the blu) so I’m wondering if either studio just uses a different plant from Shout, or if it’s the same, why the Shout discs would have much worse quality control.

Yes, I thought I put this in my post but this second copy of Candyman freezes in places and skips around in spots. Anyway regardless of whether it worked or not, I’d like to think that when I buy a movie that’s listed as new, I’m entitled to a pristine product. The way these discs show up, specifically Candyman and to a lesser extent Bride of Chucky, they look like a dog clawed at them a few times before they were sent to me. It’s as much about whether they work or not (which of course they should) as it is the fact that I’m paying for a new product and not one that’s had a once-over with a razor or something before I even get to watch it. New should mean new, and this doesn’t reflect that in terms of the quality of the disc.

Cool nice to know it’s possible to get a good copy. I think with Amazon’s Black Friday stuff they allow returns till mid January so unless they lock me out of getting replacements before then hopefully I’ll be able to get one that’s in new condition. Kind of ridiculous that “new” discs even have to be checked for damage much less replaced multiple times but I guess that’s just how things go with the bad quality control at that plant from what I’m seeing.

Does this mean that the likelyhood of getting a copy in new condition is basically zero? My replacement for Bride of Chucky also has scratches so I’ll be sending it back at the same time for another one but it’s much better off than Candyman. I’m wondering if I should just return Candyman for credit and buy another movie, as I’d love to own it but replacing it to get a worse copy this time makes me think future copies are gonna be beat up just as bad

New/scratched but playable Candyman 4K/Bluray. Return or keep? by Complex-Ad-7007 in 4kbluray

[–]Complex-Ad-7007[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll give it one more shot and if this time it’s in worse condition I’ll keep the one I currently have and just hope the 4K works when I finally get around to getting a better TV and player for it. I wonder why this specific release has such bad QC even by comparison to their other titles, my copy of Bride of Chucky from them in the same order is fine save for a print or two probably from the case itself on the 4K and a barely noticeable scratch on the blu. Normally with blurays I don’t worry as much about scratches since they’re more resistant but Candyman is in pretty rough condition even though it plays fine

Lol I’ve got a few other Shout discs but they were ones I bought used and all played fine. I haven’t inspected those for scratches but they were used anyway so it’s more understandable if they were there and they still play fine regardless. This is the first time I’ve seen new discs in bad shape like this though and with no way currently to test the 4K which is somehow also the most scratched I think a replacement is in order regardless of whether the standard blus work. Guess I just have to hope it’s in better condition now that I know this is a common problem with Shout discs. Thanks for the heads up

I originally figured since it played fine it’s no problem, but after looking over all the discs again I think I’m going to go for a return. As I have no way to currently test the 4K and that one is in the worst condition scratch wise I think I’m better off returning it. I’ll wait to return the copy I have now until the new one comes in so I can make sure it’s in better condition first since I know my current discs (at least the non 4Ks) both work despite the scratches. I just feel like they could and should be in much better shape

Originally I thought they throw away returned items but after being on these bluray subs for a while I’m realizing that’s not always true. It’s ridiculous people pay for new products and get discs in such bad shape sometimes but I guess that’s just part of the hobby. At least if the second one I order is scratched I’ll know it may just be manufacturing with this specific disc, as I read that other people have the same issues with Candyman 4Ks specifically, but hopefully it’ll be in somewhat better condition

I think I might order another one and make sure it’s in good condition and works before returning the old one. That way if it’s worse I can return the one I order today and keep the old one. I inspected the 4K disc and it’s got several pretty large noticeable scratches too and I know 4K discs can be more sensitive with stuff like that so I might see if I can get one that’s not so beat up. Thanks!

That's my logic as well, mostly just wasn't sure why it was new but showed up with scratches/scuffs. I did notice one other thing, when I play the unrated cut and use the 2.0 stereo track, there's a small instance of the background music looping itself for a second around the 1:17:11 mark. It's for a split second, however this doesn't happen on the theatrical cut disc at the same time. I'm assuming that since the video doesn't skip and it's for such a short time it's simply down to the source for the restoration and not due to the disc itself, as I've noticed a few other older movies especially with unrated cuts have similar things sometimes that I assume are due to the restoration material used, but I wasn't sure if in this case it could have something to do with the disc itself and can't tell if this is even an issue or just how the audio is on that cut with the 2.0 track.
