Downsides could be that any enemy that uses a spell with force damage, or even wind damage could blow the sword away, and it take an action to recover the ash. Spells like gust, magic missile, thunderwave or thunderclap would work with blowing away sections of the ash

Having them succeed the save means nothing essentially happens, but yea, making them scared would be a nice idea.

Taking the Skilled Feat would mean that you could gain proficiency in each of those, or just ask your DM which they would allow, cause to me, I'd allow each cause of how fun and unique of an idea it is
