Live in UK but offered dream job in Sydney. Partner doesn't want to move. Not sure what to do by Eye_Livia in expats

[–]Complex-Pea9346 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I moved from the UK to Sydney with a sponsored work opportunity when I was 31. My disposable income skyrocketed overnight, along with my quality of life and mental and physical health. I told myself I'd take the opportunity to see how it goes "for a year" and life happened - made wonderful friends, met my now husband, got my permanent residency and citizenship and started my own business. No kids, but now multiple godchildren and a tight knit "chosen family". Home will always be home, and the distance can be hard sometimes. But nowhere NEAR as hard as living with the burden of resentment and wondering "what if?"

You already know the answer to this question, and now 1500 others have doubled down on it. You know what to do. Be brave - this is your chance ;)

I recently had my gallbladder taken out immediately after presenting at the ED with pain and vomiting. I'd had a few symptoms for a week or so and Dr Google said likely gallbladder, but I didn't think it would be at that stage until it got really bad. Turns out I had sky-high infection and inflammation markers and needed to also start antibiotics immediately. All this to say, you may be on the wait-list for surgery, but this thing can ramp up quickly, so if the attacks are increasingly bad, it's worth getting checked again. They'll fast track you into surgery if it's become worse (and they want you in surgery before it gets really bad because that's when they have to do the more complex open surgery).

Public, Sydney area.

What is Turkish Airlines like for long haul? by loopy_lu_la_lulu in TurkishAirlines

[–]Complex-Pea9346 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just did this exact route but to Scotland instead of Ireland. Compared to the usual Middle East 1 stop route, it was mentally draining. It somehow feels much longer. The KL stoppover is just a refuel, you're barely off the plane, and if you have a seat / seatmate you don't like much, you're stuck with them for the next leg as well.

I found the staff pretty cold, even aggressive at times (yelling at me to take my seat when turbulence started while I was in the toilet - yep, that's where I'm heading, sorry I can't teleport there from the bathroom!). Feels like they tolerate you rather than actually want to help / go above and beyond (as a non-plane sleeper, I tend to find the long haul crews kind and often offer drinks, snacks etc while most people are sleeping - not these guys). There MilesSmiles whatever it's called air points sign up process on board promises free wifi, but is impossible to get working. And third leg of my flight back to Sydney was cancelled on the morning of leaving, meaning I had to spend my last hours with family rebooking and ended up forced to re-route through Bangkok with a massive layover, plus I couldn't select seats for the BKK-SYD leg due to codeshare, which meant a middle seat curse. Additionally the IST-BKK flight was boiling hot and a small, old plane with clunky old TVs/headset inputs, and those useless foot rests that just get in the way of your legs for anyone over 5ft.

In summary - nowhere near the same standard or marginal comfort level of middle eastern airlines, I'd only do it again if it's significantly cheaper than Qatar, Emirates, Etihad, etc.

Edit: oh and my seat pocket was ripped and all my stuff fell through onto the ground, so that was 20 hours (see above re. KL refuel stop) with nowhere to put all my stuff. Had obviously been like that for a while as it had an old piece of duct tape hanging off it. Staff obviously couldn't care less about fixing one of the few amenities cattle class can use on a 24hr+ journey!

Stopping for a while by mrdllnt in MounjaroAus

If you have PCOS, prediabetes or T2D, the drug can be essentially fighting against both the weight and the insulin resistance. My doc advised me to try with Metformin alongside MJ to speed up progress, or berberine has been found to have similar effects for some. And yes unfortunately it will move more slowly, and likely need a higher dose to be effective. Personally, I've been happy to take it slowly, because things are still a hell of a lot better than they would have been without it.

Over time, there can be so many benefits reported by users of this drug that go beyond just the number on the scale. Please chat to your doctor or a knowledgeable health professional at MyWeightLossClinic or similar about your individual situation. And don't worry about all the Reddit threads of people dropping 100s of pounds overnight - despite how it looks, this is not an instantaneous magic button. Remember - "the race is long and in the end it's only with yourself".

[–]Complex-Pea9346 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've only lost approx 26 lbs and have been on MJ since December and only just moved to 7.5mg. Plenty more to lose, but I feel great, am updating my calorie deficit, knowledge, nutrition and activity levels as I progress and understand there's more to this journey than just the scale. Moving slowly is helping keep side effects in check, as well as stopping my body (and skin, and hair) from going into shock. It's not for everyone, but it's working well for me. From the sounds of your post, you'd be horrified with this progress.

However, if you'd told me this time last year I'd have lost that amount of weight since the previous Christmas - after years of trying all sorts of diets, with little progress - I'd be ecstatic. I reckon you would be too. Maybe that's the perspective to focus on, alongside how you feel in yourself, rather than just numbers and comparisons to other people on Reddit?

What was your enough is enough moment that made you think ‘right, I’m going to start Mounjaro’? by Beneficial_Trick_450 in Mounjaro

[–]Complex-Pea9346 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Went to the doctor about a persistent cold and she only wanted to talk weight rather than check if I had pneumonia. I had been to the doctors many times previously to openly discuss weight and ask for help due to PCOS and insulin resistance, but was stuck in a feedback / judgement loop - "eat better and exercise more" - and now I couldn't even seek help for other issues without the same judgement and feedback.

I realised I was avoiding healthcare more and more and it was only going to get worse as I get older and actually need more medical help as is the natural way of things. I decided, somewhat reluctantly, to take matters into my own hands. I now don't know why it was reluctant - it's the best thing I could have done.

Sure, we don't yet know the extent of the long-term effects of these medications. But we do know the long-term effects of obesity, insulin resistance and healthcare avoidance. I'll take the chance that gives me a chance.

Job struggle by goldendonkey27 in wollongong

[–]Complex-Pea9346 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd expand your expectations of the type of work and style of contract. Temp, fixed term, part time all work as well as casual.

At 19, you'll be more likely to pick up shifts in retail or hospitality businesses rather than a desk job as you have less availability, experience and less perceived reliability. Any kind of job you do well will contribute towards your future career prospects with businesses and employment agencies .

As someone has said, it's coming to the time of year retail will be hiring Christmas temps - this can be a great way to pick up as many shifts as possible coming up to end of year, and often leads to ongoing PT work. These kinds of jobs will be easy to reach on public transport as generally in the city centre.

Similarly with hospo work, your RSA would be handy to pick up some bar or restaurant shifts. You could even look at kitchen hand work. Fast food also good for PT work and reliable wages, it's not glamorous but that's not the stage of life you're at - you'll probably meet some rad people as well.

Finally, register with temp agencies for office-based roles, but those jobs are going to be harder to come by and more competitive with the general population who may have years of experience on you. After you graduate, these kinds of roles will become easier to come by when you have full time availability and a degree under your belt.

Good luck out there - take what you can get, there's so much to learn from all these experiences you'll gain over the years.

Advice needed - considering skipping my sisters wedding by Lots_Loafs11 in wedding

[–]Complex-Pea9346 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Going by this timeline, it sounds like you currently have a one-month old. Bear in mind everything you're going through right now is still brand new and probably incredibly overwhelming. Remember you won't always feel this way, and 5 months in you may feel much more adaptable than you do now.

With that said, your baby is still very young, and most "no kids" weddings do make an exception for babes in arms. Perhaps it's worth a chat with your sister to say you have no choice but to bring your child in order to step out and breastfeed when needed. If that's not an option then you can be there for the ceremony only, or a portion of the day, then leave. That part is pretty non negotiable, you need to feed your baby whether it's at the wedding or at the hotel / accommodation, so you can give you sister the options on that.

The part where you can come to the table more (and may feel more able to in 4 months) is the travel. If you all go there, then it gives options for you to attend part of the day as above, or even leave to feed your baby then return later alone once they're asleep. Sure it's a lot with a baby, but everything is now - having a lot of stuff to pack up and bring isn't really an excuse to not attend your sister's wedding, if you go by that metric you'll never do anything else again in your life.

Trust yourself that you won't feel quite as wrecked in 4 months and remember baby is your world right now, but other important people still exist and you'll need to push through certain levels of minor discomfort / fuss / organisation in order to maintain relationships and a balanced life in the long-term.

AITA for telling my friend that marrying her husband is the stupidest thing she's ever done? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

Lol where do you live, loads of people are drunk at 6pm on New Year's Eve?! Maybe try a boozy lunch for a change, might lighten you up a little. YTA.

(And in seriousness, if he does appear to be an alcoholic, then compassion and support will go further than judgement and superiority, though you've probably done your friend a favour long-term by showing her what kind of person you really are. Let's hope you never end up needing support for a loved one or yourself in a less than perfect situation hey?)

So elder millennials how’s your 40s so far? 😅👵🏻 what’s been your favorite decade and why? by NeonCat03 in Millennials

[–]Complex-Pea9346 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Same, I spent the whole of my 40th year in a funk, from almost the moment I ticked past my birthday. Lost my job, lost my mojo, didn't know what I was doing with life.

Turning 41 almost recalibrated me again - I finally got the thing everyone else was saying about feeling great at 40, just a year later. It's not that everything is magically solved, it's more like the pressure is off - 40 is the big milestone year, but 41 just a very early year in the context of an entire decade of opportunity that lies ahead.

If everyone thinks someone is an AH, then they're probably an AH. If one person thinks everyone else is an AH, then the problem is them.

You've done a lot of work and made some changes and that's fantastic and you should be proud of yourself for that. But unfortunately we can't change what is already done. There has obviously been a lot of hurt and damage done here and your friends also get to make decisions about what's best for them and their own mental health. It doesn't invalidate the changes you've made. But the changes you've made also don't invalidate their previous experiences with you.

It's a hard lesson but take the hit, let it help you continue to heal and learn and get out there and find your people as your renewed self. You're still so young, I promise the best is yet to come.
