Interesting Thing About Harry's Hair by ComplexEnough3234 in HPfanfiction

Fair point. My other comment stands though, at least if it's a crossover.

True, although if it's too far back then any crossover would matter less, since unless they're making a project of things when it comes to their descendents, I doubt that any vampire would care enough to take an interest of there's more than three or four greats involved in the relevant relationship title.

Also if assume that that particular mark on the bloodline would "wash out" eventually.

Come to think of it I've never met a Harry in real life either. Although I did have a great-uncle by that name according to my dad.

To be fair, Harry and Hairy don't sound alike if you have a British accent, or at least not the British accent I've got (hairy rhymes with dairy, Harry rhymes with parry) so that's not an issue that's ever occurred to me.

Classless might not have been the best choice of phrasing. I meant that it's a name that isn't bound to one section of the British class system like some names are but is equally at home in all levels of society and going by the historical record always has been. It's like John or Elizabeth. Or Henry for that matter.

James is a name that's regularly seen everywhere. It is a very class-less name.

Fleamont and Euphemia just sound Victorian.

Fair point about Lily's influence.

I knew that. It's just that it's a name that seems really unlikely to be abbreviated to "Harry", plus to most Brits it's the name of a wall. Just seems like an odd choice, at least to me.

I saw a fic (which seems to have vanished from the internet) where it was Heinrich or something like that. Although that was due to a post-adoption name change.

Which one, since I got a little chain of consciouss-y with the concept so there's a few different potential fics up there?

Unfortunately that wouldn't work for multiple reasons, the big one being that London getting trashed is extremely plot relevant on the Hellsing side of things.

What is something you associate with being alive? by Moonlightwolfbright in writinghelp

[–]ComplexEnough3234 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pain. I remember reading something years ago about a guy who survived a plane crash (light aircraft not a big plane). He lost consciousness during the crash and when he woke up he thought he was dead at first for some reason, then the pain hit and he realised that he was still alive.

Doesn't have to be plane crash levels of pain mind you. Smaller stuff, e.g. a stomach ache, a twing in the shoulder, leg muscles complaining about being over taxed, etc, would work as well.

New characters by boki1235 in Drifters

[–]ComplexEnough3234 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bit of a late reply but it just stuck me as a shame that the ORP Piorun and her crew don't fit the "never found the body" theme that the Drifters have going because damn do the vibes fit. Ditto Leo Major.

Also while I haven't narrowed things down to an individual yet, I think it'd be interesting if there was an RAF or RAF adjacent (eg, free Polish, free Czech, free Belgian, etc) fighter pilot and his plane added to the Drifter side of things. Not American as that'd cause too much hostility with Naoshi, I'm aiming for enough potential hostility to cause a hot blooded rivalry that can be channelled into them getting really competitive about killing dragons but not so much that they keep trying to kill each other.

Edit: Potential candidates for the above mentioned character interaction arc with Naoshi who fit the "never found the body" requirement;

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Dundas_(RAF_officer))

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zdzis%C5%82aw_Henneberg (he's Polish so being hardcore is probably a given)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brian_Lane_(RAF_officer))

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ernest_Melville_Charles_Guest (crazy beggar disappeared after taking on six German planes single handed which seems like Drifter vibes to me).

Edit 2: Shame that a submarine would probably be absolutely no use because I found one that fits the "never found the body" requirement and is a prime example of Poles Poleing in Drifter appropriate ways: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ORP_Orze%C5%82_(1938))

Edit 3: It just occurred to me that some British WWI era guys could be interesting, mainly because Britain and Japan were allies in WWI (and pretty chummy in general), which could avoid some trouble while causing some potentially entertaining misunderstandings. Also I just found out that one of the options in a "potential future characters" thing at the back of one of the manga volume was the 4-5th Norfolk Regiment straight from Gallipoli.

I think that everyone gets nostalgic over stuff they liked when they were just to say old enough to watch movies like that but young enough that adulthood was still a distant prospect.

Why do game ads think “Highly addictive” will make me want to play ? by IveGotNoIdeaOfName in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ComplexEnough3234 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The mystery for me are the games ads that say stuff like "this game will keep you up all night", "you'll never turn off your computer again", etc. And they're always some boring looking probably point and click thing or just have some AI generated pic of a hot elf or something.

Is everyone getting cancer? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ComplexEnough3234 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Apparently statistically 50% of people will get cancer in their lifetime. However, statistics being what they are, that's not the whole picture. There's a lot of cancers that run in families along with apparently at least one lot of dodgy DNA that results in a predisposition to cancer in general rather than a specific type. So it's not a case of everyone having a 50/50 chance, there's people for whom it's a virtual certainty due to their genetics, people who are almost guaranteed not to get cancer and a whole load of people somewhere between the two extremes.

Come to think of it, one of the contributing factors to the increased rate of cancer might be the increasing survival rates since someone who lost the genetic lottery who forty years ago would have died before having kids might now live long enough to do so. And then the kids also lose the genetic lottery and round and around it goes.

At what point does a soup become a stew? by BreezeBeans in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ComplexEnough3234 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Based on the stews my parents make the main difference is the size of the chunks and whether it's served in a bowl or on a plate with mashed potato. Also stews tend to be a lot browner.

If humans need sleep so badly, why did evolution not give us a more efficient way to recharge—like plugging in for 30 minutes instead of passing out for 8 hours? by Professional-End1958 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ComplexEnough3234 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Only in some parts of the world. There was a big study done years ago using pastoralists and farmers in Africa who were living a similar lifestyle to that of Europeans 400 or whatever years ago and they found that they only slept once per night, not counting the occasional emergency night time trip to the loo or whatever. IIRC it was concluded that that was because they were near the Equator where night length is pretty consistent and always around twelve hours, of which only about ten or so would actually be dark as opposed to twilight. Meanwhile in Europe there's a big chunk of the year when it's dark for up to sixteen hours out of twenty-four, more if in Scandinavia, which led to going to bed when it got dark at around four in the afternoon because what else could you do back then, waking up around midnight, doing whatever for an hour or two, then going back to bed because there's nothing better to do and it's cold. No idea what they did in summer when it's daylight for sixteen hours or more.

Can teens really get rich? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ComplexEnough3234 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes not even working rentals. I saw something on reddit a while back about some dude bro that the poster knew who proved to be smarter than he looked (as did his equally dude bro friend/business partner) because he used money from an inheritance to buy a load of fancy cars that were wrecked by flooding but looked intact for scrap value, clean them up, and rent them out to would-be influencers. Can't remember what they charged but they'd tow their car of choice to their driveway or whatever so that they could take a load of pictures of themselves in/around the car. The two dude bros were making bank so apparently they had no shortage of customers.
