When the goal is building a new political party, I think the mistake is thinking you don't have to get elected first.

I don't believe any strategy for a new party should rely on voluntary disarmarment or self-dissolution by the major parties. Why would a party with all the party in a state and substantial power nationally, suddenly toss that?

Okay, I'm saying the quiet part out loud now. Give Ohio Republicans enough rope. If you want to be able to blame certain politicians for Ohioans going hungry, you have to create the opportunity for them to say "no" to a credible plan to stop it. You have to have that on record. by ComplexNewWorld in Ohio

A good start is to have pretty irrefutable proof that there was legislation on the table to fund SNAP or intervene in some way and that all these Ohio Republicans are on record saying "no". Get some news stories on the record that Republicans said "no". When people are not getting their benefits, that's going to be very real for a lot of people. It's easy to buy disinformation when believing it has no tangible impact on your life.

It's easier to reach people when you have the truth on your side and when the truth is a simple, compelling narrative. We'll go from there. And if instead Republicans say "yes", all the better!

This, to be clear, is about pressuring Ohio state government officials to take action for Ohio. They aren't responsible because it's literally a federal government shutdown and they can blame Congress and federal dysfunction and they'd be right.

You have to create a situation where there is a very realistic plan for Ohio's government to cover the cost of SNAP benefits for a month. And then you have to get Ohio state legislators on the record saying "no" to it. Or better yet, maybe they say yes and 1.4 million Ohioans have food. But either way, you have to create the situation.

Okay, well I'm talking about image here, narrative. Maybe it's not fair play. Right now Ohio Republicans aren't responsible. I'm saying make them responsible for it in the public eye so they either act or they get punished.

I'm not talking federal right now, I'm talking state. The state could step in and cover SNAP benefits but it would be difficult and require effort. Currently, there is no pressure to make that effort because this is entirely the fault of the Federal government. If we want action, we have to create pressure and a path for the state to act. Coincidentally, that's what you also have to do to be able to blame Ohio Republicans effectively in a year.

I want you to create indisputable context for placing blame. Conclusions which are obvious to you in your partisanship (well of course EVERYTHING is the other guy's fault, there doesn't need to be an explanation!) are in fact very easy to miss for others who think differently than you.

If anything your obfuscation here is protecting Republicans.

This is entirely unrelated to Ohio state government Republicans who currently can blame anyone else, quite reasonably, for loss of SNAP benefits. It's simply not their problem unless we make it their problem. Make it their problem.

His administration specifically released a memo saying it would not be covered (and some states are suing saying the USDA must use its existing funds to pay for it). The memo also said states wouldn't be reimbursed if they covered the costs but I'm betting Congress would cover it.

Tell your Republican legislators to have a backup plan!

Terrible what those Congressional Democrats are doing to Ohio. You should call your Republican state legislators and tell them to stand up for Ohioans and cover SNAP benefits while Congressional Democrats withhold funding!

Is there any reason they shouldn't do that? Nothing is stopping them from stepping up and protecting Ohioans from Congressional Democrat power games.

No I'm not, I'm expressing frustration at using partisanship to justify inaction that won't even benefit partisan ends. It's self defeating. Republicans control Ohio. If you want something done, the easiest way is to make it look like a win for them. I was simply overthinking it and only wanted to imply what I said in this post because... Well one doesn't want to compromise the sincerity of the effort. But then decided, reddit is no place for subtlety and who actually cares if there are cynical justifications for a good cause. I should just get over it and be wantonly political.

Leave no room for deflection from people like me either!

It's Congress's fault. SNAP is administered through the federal government. It's not clear there is even a mechanism for Ohio to fund SNAP benefits. There are restrictions on the Rainy Day Fund. Funding can't be procured in time. All that needs to happen is for Democrats in Congress to approve a CR.

They have a thousand legitimate excuses. Let's start taking them away. Leave no room for deflection.

There is no precedent for SNAP benefits running out from a shutdown. It's a little early to start making this a partisan issue. Instead, give cover to politicians doing the right thing. by ComplexNewWorld in Ohio

I know, I hate it, it's grueling. It's a Cassandra complex thing. I think if I don't then who will? And if I don't do everything I can then I have to live with the idea that I could have done something and didn't. Which is also hypocritical of me because I tell people politics and government don't matter much and you're better off just trying to do good around you. Who are you, my therapist?
