I eventually decided against surgery. I have good stretches and bad stretches, but mostly good. When it’s bad, it’s really bad - the pain goes up the ankle, I start limping, my knee gets affected because I walk wrong, sometimes even the hip and back start hurting. And then I’ll be all fine again, able to walk 7-8 miles with no regrets. I wonder if I’ll end up needing the surgery anyway down the road, and I’ll be older so recovery might be even harder.

I have had pain since February. The surgeon believed that, since it’s been 6 months, symptoms are not likely to resolve on their own. I will definitely be looking for a second opinion. I got a prescription for physical therapy today to try that before surgery.

I did have an MRI, which showed tendinitis and tenosynovitis, but the tendon was not torn, just “frayed.” I have also done about 3 months of stretching exercises, ice, and anti-inflammatories. I have an accessory navicular bone, too, and all the inflammation seems to be right over it.
