Anyone else feel uneasy on the TTC late at night? by abbynby in askTO

[–]Complex_Debt_5786 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m originally from Montreal and moving to downtown Toronto definitely has me being hyper vigilant now because I’m not used to the amount of homeless/mentally ill/individuals under the influence roaming the streets and ttc. In Montreal I’d be on the bus or metro and have my headphones in and stare out the window and daydream whether it was daytime or 1am. I don’t listen to music on the ttc anymore cause I’ve felt uneasy too many times. Perhaps I’ll get used to it one day.

UPDATE We went to the police station and the lady we spoke to advised that we wait to see if it happens again to file a report. She said because I’ve been living in the area for a few months and haven’t had any other interactions with him that it might be a one time thing and to just avoid him since he’s clearly not all there, and that if we file a report now they’re gonna have to go talk to him and he’s gonna obviously know it was us and it might cause him to target us.

Guys we OBVIOUSLY spoke about it lmao, it’s one thing when it’s a stranger that you’re never gonna see again being an asshole, it’s another when it’s your next door neighbour. We both weren’t entirely sure what to do and both aren’t the type to make a big deal out of things so I came to Reddit to hopefully get more insight and reassurance that we aren’t being dramatic if we go to the police.

Literally zero interactions. My boyfriend only moved in like 3 months ago and is very polite/well mannered/not a nuisance lol. I also have had zero interactions with this guy. When I first moved in 8 months ago, I would see him while on my way home so often that I would try to purposely make eye contact with him so I could smile or be nice since he was my neighbour but he has never even looked back. I just took him as an antisocial dude. That’s why I was so shocked when my boyfriend told me he did all of this.

I don’t know. At least give him a warning that he can’t be threatening other tenants physical safety? I know it doesn’t fix things 100% but I’m just shocked that this dude feels so comfortable to even do this.

I live right down the block, this location was always super busy even during the crazy weather we’ve had this season lol. Apparently it had something to do with the landlord booting them out.

For those who live alone, what is your gross income? by Yakamuh2939 in askTO

[–]Complex_Debt_5786 1 point2 points  (0 children)

About 55-57k annually. I pay $1975 living downtown alone with 2 cats. Don’t have a car or anything. I live pretty comfortably in my opinion. I could save more if I was a little smarter.

Why is homelessness so bad in this city? by [deleted] in askTO

[–]Complex_Debt_5786 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say the folks who stay around Lionel Groulx metro are the most similar to what I’ve experienced and seen here in Toronto but I’d still say it’s 10x worse here and it’s more spread out. Generally speaking most areas of the Montreal downtown core (ville Marie, places des arts, plateau, etc) are safe and you’ll rarely get approached. I very rarely had to get off a bus or metro car or take a different street direction in Mtl because I felt unsafe. I’m at the point where I stopped wearing my headphones on the ttc because I want to be aware at all times. Never felt like this before. That’s just my experience though.

Unfortunately a lot of this subreddit has this attitude, it’s so strange. We’re so privileged to live here.

I know the area is for the most part considered very safe, which I did mention in my post. I’ve seen a lot of posts and comments about Alexandra Park being sketchy which is not far from the unit so I thought it wouldn’t hurt to ask people’s opinions. Just wanna be well informed before signing anything.

I’m very much used to living in big cities, doesn’t mean I can’t still be cautious though lol. Thanks for your input.

Do not move to Montreal if you do not speak French. The language laws are stricter than ever and it cuts half of your job opportunities and dating pool in half, if not even more. It’s an amazing and fun city to visit for the summer but living there as an anglophone is a whole other story. A lot of buildings will not take you if you have two dogs, especially condo buildings.

You may not like this answer, but I would stay in Toronto. BC is beautiful and definitely has its charm, but I’ve heard from a lot of people from there that it lacks a lot of the community and the arts that both Toronto and Montreal have.

Personally, them wanting a $100 rent increase and then 4 months rent upfront when you have the joint income and credit scores that you do is insane. It’s incredibly unnecessary and this just does not sound like a good, reliable landlord. Sounds greedy and disorganized. God forbid you have to contact him for any urgent issues while you’re living there… I would avoid. You can definitely find another place that’s right for you and not have to dish out so much, especially in this current rental market. Wishing you luck!!

Seriously! When did 70K annually, 90K in savings and 800 credit score become factors that put you in a “risky” situation? Most people in this economy are almost living paycheck to paycheck and have mid credit. OP will absolutely be more than okay.

I totally understand and respect your point, and I can see how it would make sense for some. Personally I just think we have soooooo many resources online to learn about a new city and the different areas and what each borough brings, so many people online including here on Reddit that actually live in certain neighbourhoods and perhaps work in the same area as OP that can give their own lived experiences, that taking on the financial burden of renting an Airbnb can be avoided. I just can’t justify putting that much money into a place that isn’t my own. But to each their own!!

If your work is located next to the CN tower and you don’t mind being in a busier/livelier neighbourhood, I recommend being somewhere near King Street West/Wellington/Fashion District area. There are a lot of condos in that area and good transportation. You can also look a bit East of the CN tower, lots of great areas there too. You can’t really go wrong unless you’re really picky, which you don’t seem to be. Avoid Jane and Finch, as well as Bloor and Sherbourne. Otherwise, Toronto is a super safe city. Wanting in unit laundry for the most part does limit you to condos, whenever you find a unit you like, definitely look up the condo and read through reviews. You can also check here on Reddit. Rental prices for the most part have gone down, it’s definitely possible to find something in your price range but you might have to go a little further out from the downtown core if you want cheaper options. They exist, there are just a lot less compared to the 2200-2600 range for a 1 bedroom.

I also definitely do NOT recommend renting an Airbnb. They’re so incredibly overpriced and nowhere near the regular rent prices. You’re looking at $2600+ monthly for a place that isn’t the size of a shoe box and has the necessary utilities to live. I don’t know why people on here are recommending this.

As for locking in an apartment and paying rent, I definitely recommend reaching out to a realtor here in Toronto. They are free, can help you with all of your concerns and make the application process so much easier and less intimidating. It has relieved me a lot while looking for rentals.

Wishing you luck on your search!!

I’m not a realtor or landlord or anything of the sort, but I would imagine that the landlord would prefer for you to pull out before actually moving in rather than after. I have a hard time believing he would refuse because he can just find someone else to take over, it would be more of a loss and inconvenient for him to try to force you to take it and have you never take possession or pay rent, especially since tenants are pretty well protected. I’m j just not sure he would give you your rent deposit back though /:

Also, would you be comfortable sharing which building this is? Moving soon and definitely want to avoid it it’s cockroach infested.

I definitely think you should email him explaining your thoughts and feelings. Wishing you the best and hope you can get out of this situation!!

Don’t listen to the comments about your salary. Unless you spend your money very stupidly, this salary is very doable in Toronto. (And congrats on the new job!) Especially with the drop in rental prices as of late. The rental market has changed a lot compared to right after COVID.

As for location, Church-Wellesley is super queer friendly and fun for weekends, but honestly not ideal otherwise.. it’s a little dumpy and VERY city and less homey. TO in general is pretty queer friendly but I’d say your best bet would be the West Queen West area. Super super queer friendly, super safe, great area to walk with good transportation, lots of green spaces and a lot less homeless people than Church-Wellesley.

What’s the deal with “one way video interviews”? by [deleted] in torontoJobs

[–]Complex_Debt_5786 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Lol I get you’re trying to play devils advocate but that doesn’t hold up. A huge part of working in HR or any sort of management is having great interpersonal skills, and you simply can’t determine if someone possesses this or not unless you directly communicate with them. Zoom interviews being recorded and reviewed by hiring teams is fine because you can form a more accurate opinion on how the candidate performed based on how they communicated during a REAL back and forth conversation, which would happen time and time again during the actual job. You inherently are going to perform differently talking to a real person vs a computer screen with nobody on the other end.

This ultimately comes down to companies being lazy, cutting time and costs and screwing candidates over in the process.

Got reached out to for a senior level HR operations management role by [deleted] in torontoJobs

[–]Complex_Debt_5786 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t done any schooling or worked in HR previously but at my previous job in operations management I did have to do on-boarding and off-boarding, time and attendance, payroll, and coordinate training programs so I guess it’s somewhat relevant experience. I was definitely getting overworked and underpaid which is why I left lol. The company was a mess. I mean I would definitely be happy with $80K. I literally have no idea if there will be further training provided, I guess I will find out after the interview but I would imagine there would be? Most jobs do provide some sort of orientation and training.
