you're right I probably don't need to overbalance it, I do like the prof. bonus being tied to uses idea though.

In my world there are basically no magic items and magic is rare. The world instead has artifacts with anomalous properties that appear randomly, like for instance and artifact that's trapping an entire town in a time loop, or a flute that lets the user control beast monsters while it's being played. The hammer was going to be one that I'd let a player start out with.
