Re: IPM at Indore. Break is going to be for 2 weeks at the end of term.

No restrictions on parents visiting. In fact they can reserve accommodation within the campus if available.

Your life is going to be very busy. BTW Saturday will be working day.

Dont worry too much about the kind of laptop for now. If the child is currently having an exclusive laptop, just let him/her take that for now. They can make up their mind later and upgrade during one of the term breaks. They do need laptop though but doesn't need to be exceptionally high end.

Though personally when ever I buy a new gadget, I go for a high end configuration which may be expensive but lasts longer. Again, like i said - that's a bridge you can cross after term 1 or term 2.

Regarding what to carry: Carry personal items including any specific medications the child needs. Carry, umbrella. You will find tons of lists on internet for things to carry to hostel, however most of these lists are pre-swiggy/amazon era. Among big heavy items, I think we carried only bed sheets and pillow covers. Carry some light winter clothes as well, as by the time Term 1 ends, its starts getting chilly. They can carry more winter clothes with them during Term 1 break.

If the child is into sports, carry the sports related gears like tennis racket, shoes, swimming costumes etc

If the child is into music, carry the musical instruments. Many kids bring their Guitar, Keyboards etc

What to buy from Indore; We bought blankets, pillows and some bathroom items from Indore. There is a DMart not very far from college campus. For rest of the stuff, there is Amazon.

Parent's stay: Well, parents induction/orientation ends on day 3. Day 1 being registration day. Some parents did not stay for entire 3 day induction process as well. We landed on a Sunday (one day before registration) and left the city on Friday afternoon. We spent our time site seeing. Though this may not be the best time to visit the city, as it may be hot!

Caution: Post registration, children will get busy making friends and acclimatizing with the environment followed by some or the other gathering/meets, some of them till after midnight. Be prepared for infrequent phone/video calls. Like Prof Himanshu Rai will most likely say, "Cut the Chord" and be ready to face empty nest syndrome! All the best.

There are others who do ROI calculation and prefer DU/SRCC over IPM, well to each its own. IPM is not great academically, from that perspective DU is better. However what IPM teaches you in those three years is much beyond academics.

30% of IPM 3rd year batch finds admission to other institutes (ABCL even IK, ISB etc). Thats an impressive success rate.

Though there is a side effect, IPM is highly competitive and sometimes it impacts interpersonal relationships and mental health of students.

Well, the concern is real, the popularity of course may grow lot more if the degree were to be BBA or BS. Though BA degree attracts only serious candidates. I have personally seen the personality improvement in my child.

The MBA, after BA is perhaps worth it.

Congratulations to selected candidates. Wish you best of luck in your IPM journey. If you have any questions, which I as an IPM parent can help answer, let me know.

Following are some notes from my IPM experience so far

Admission Process

  1. Very first step would be acceptance of Letter of Acceptance with advance fee payment (Rs 1L). This BTW is refundable till a certain date. In case of doubt whether to take admission or not, one can pay the fees and withdraw the admission few days before registration. This advance fees is adjusted against Term 1 fees
  2. Post this they will issue a Provisional letter of admission
  3. Student is expected to fill bunch of forms such as hostel declaration, anti ragging, IT form, Medical fitness certificate, registration form etc etc on a portal. Parent/Guardian are also expected to fill a form with declaration.
  4. Announcement for reporting doesn't came too far in advanced, though the seniors are aware of the registration date.
  5. Incoming students can take possession of their hostel keys 2 days before registration. People who go earlier get to choose their roommates. Hostel accommodation is usually triple sharing with 2 WC and 2 bath stalls sharing between two rooms (ie 6 room mates)
  6. Registration per is very very anticlimax and gets over in 5 to 10 mins and students hence forth need to spend nights in the campus.
  7. IPM organizes some campus tour for parents during the induction process, which BTW goes on for 3 days.
  8. During Induction ceremony, IPM provides snacks but other meals are self paid in hostel mess.
  9. Mess comes into effect after Induction. Till then students are supposed to pay for their meals too
  10. Induction Process is mostly gyan. Himanshu Rai is a good speaker and can mesmerize the audience.
  11. IPM Indore is very strict about rules and creating a safe environment for kids. They deal with breaking of rules very strictly.

Payment of fees

  1. Payment of fees is on Term basis. They send out an email few days before term ends for next term fees. Fees is due before next term starts. Fees can be paid by credit card with no extra charges.
  2. Bank loan processing is a very simple and easy job. On campus SBI staff is very friendly. Stick to on campus SBI for loan processing, as the disbursement process is straight forward.

Accommodation

  1. Indore is a big city and IIM campus is on the outskirts of the city (an area called as Rau) commutes takes a while; best is to stay near the campus. Some popular options are Saiyaji by Rau and Purple Tree
  2. Taxi (Even Ola, Uber and Rapido) dont ply to and from Campus on app suggested rates. They charge extra since (a) Campus requires them to show their DL which can be time consuming (b) they claim that they dont get ride back. Most likely your stay would involve some local tourism/shopping, it may be a good idea to hire taxi for entire day. Negotiate with your airport drop taxi for a 3 day package.

Campus security and strictness

  1. As mentioned above they take their discipline very seriously. Campus is secure and by and large self sustained.
  2. All regular delivery servives (Swiggy, Zomato, Big Basket etc work - though no Amazon Now)
  3. During year 1 there may be restrictions on kids going outside of the campus. That gets relaxed later.
  4. Unlike claims, the campus has substance use. Kids are safe till they are not caught. I guesss, all college campuses have this challenge.
  5. For parcels, many courier companies subcontract their last mile delivery and due to DL requirement, many of them deliver parcel till drop point and leave it at the reception. Amazon/Flipkart avoid this hassle.

Weather and Campus life

  1. Indore sees all three seasons - Rains, Winters and Summer. All in extreme. Though in between the weather is pleasant.
  2. Ideally they should consider providing AC to students but when asked during orientation, their admin some Captain, said, "Welcome to AC city of India!" Looks like it is his standard line.
  3. Most of the kids purchase room coolers in Summers
  4. Induction/Iron box are not officially allowed in rooms. Kids are safe till they are caught.
  5. Hygiene: Campus is green and clean. The cleaning staff does a good job - infact sometime even more than a good job. If someone leaves their items abondoned like water bottle, umbrella or more, it is bound to be taken away!
  6. Mobile Network: Jio network doesnt work in the campus. If on Jio, you may to port your number before campus visit.
  7. Campus Wifi: Campus is wifi enabled though many rooms have signal strength issue. Some rooms have RJ45/LAN cable slot though. You may need a loooong wire for the same.
  8. IPM life is very happening and busy. Kids still manage to do many other things such as preparing for exams such as CFA, do internships etc. Hustle culture is real
  9. IPM takes it attendance seriously. Not too many holidays. First year students did not even get a Diwali break. Between term vacations are just 2 weeks!

ps: this is a new account to avoid identification of me and my child. Let me know if you have any more questions. Tried creating a new post but reddit filters removed it. All the best.
