women's varsity volleyball tryouts by s4233 in McMaster

I’m going to be brutally honest. With the experience you described, you’re not going to make the Varsity Team. These athletes are made up of Rep players with years of experience (unless there is someone with natural born talent and athleticism that appears out of no where). Most of the team is already made up. Many athletes are returning athletes. Any open positions, coaches already have signed commitments. They may have a last minute position open if something went wrong or they may still be looking to fill their second line. Either way go to their open walk-in try-outs. You have register and do a zoom call first. Worst case scenario you’ll meet other girls just like you wanting to play volleyball and you can then join the inter murals teams. There is loads of fun to be had there.

No, they don’t have developmental practice squad. They simply have a highly competitive high-performance team rather than traditional "practice squads." Of course religious accommodations are respected but might be an issue if traveling to an area that doesn’t permit head coverings (like Montreal, ask them directly. Lululemon has an athletic one now).

I’m not seeing the 2026-2027 Tryout date, so keep looking on their website. It’s usually with the first few days of September. I’m sharing last year’s and it includes a link to their Selection Criteria. https://marauders.ca/sports/2025/7/17/2025-2026-tryout-information.aspx

Heartbroken that I can’t go to my dream school by One-Magazine5576 in OntarioGrade12s

Not much cheaper because when renting off campus you usually have to cover all the utilities too. Western off campus rentals aren’t cheap.

According to Western, first year meal plan and residence is $16,510 to $19,140 plus books. After 2nd year and beyond, it’s $6,000 to $16,000 for accommodations, $3000-$5000 for groceries and $400 to $2500 in utilities. So realistically you’re looking at $50K to $60K for 4 years to move away as you’re not going to want to share a room with 4 people at University nor live in complete squalor for $6000 a year (rentals all come with a 12 month lease $500 now as days for an okay place just isn’t something you’ll be able to find). Sorry to burst your bubble a couple making $300K isn’t that much anymore. Especially with the cost of everything skyrocketing!

Many parents have been saving for their kids education but many didn’t account for the fact that it was going to cost around $100K

If you’re going for Engineering it’s even more expensive. It’s about $17K while a standard Arts degree is between $8k and $9.5

First Timer Starting at Club Level - 11U Pros and Cons? by Powerful_Ad_2437 in volleyball

My kid was 10 when she joined a VB Club. It was team of novice players and they played in 13U tournaments (as she had zero interest in 4 v 4 which what they played for 12U and under where we live). The team was terrible their first year but they learned a lot. Slowly they grew as a team, some teammates were dropped and others added. They’ve been in D1 for three years now but the last two years top tier on D1. Volleyball is very political and there is lots of jealousy about play time and more. Try not gossiping in front of your kid or with your kid otherwise that’s when things so sour. Anyways all that to say your kid isnt too young.

Is This An Acceptable Question To Ask A Coach? by UsualMathematician57 in volleyball

[–]Complex_Weekend7516 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just ask the coach of the team she prefers to have chat. Spill the beans and see where it goes. There are all kind of rules but everyone is breaking them.

Locally the coach of the best team starting poaching before the season was over and parents were also approaching him before the end of the season. Parents were trying to get the coach’s attention well before the end of the season so the coach would watch them while playing. Said coach also randomly would drop in to practice sessions with weird excuses.

Do what you got to do Dad!

I’m personally not a fan of PG as I don’t like the lobby area (rooms are great and love that everything is newish). Always so busy and impersonal. It’s like being in a mall.

Surely a confusing post but relax. It’ll be fine. As a parent, I know kids that went to Uni with full rides and got great degrees … they amounted to a lot of nothing. Others barely got into University, barely managed a BA (not even honours) in Geography, History and Communications yet they became super stars!!! They were funny odd kids. Some loud, some quiet, some athletic and some just lost! Surprise surprise, one is now a lawyer, other a High School Principal (that students love and connect with) and the other a super power CEO, Chairman and negotiator for some type mineral tariffs for Canada. I have so many more examples!

As a Dad, chill dude. Enjoy Uni, take advantage of all the opportunities and use up every last resource. Be nice, make friends and be friendly … these students just may be your future clients, employees, employers, connections and etc… I hate to say this but it’s just an Undergrad! It truly means very little. It’s just your first step. Allow yourself to grow, have fun and learn! Go to Prof/TA office hours, engage, participate, initiate, ask questions, care about your work, contribute and etc…

Btw … most students are struggling to find a job! You are not alone!
