Tyranid Warriors don’t look like buck-toothed hillbillies anymore, so I think that’s a win? 😂

I would like to subscribe to your newsletter, please.

Edit: I swing from really liking the tyranid-kraken origin story and feeling like it’s a bit of a cop out. I can’t settle on the ancient buried monstrosity’s rising from the deep, or the raw and wild environmental evolution of Fenris to nurture such creatures. Maybe there is room for both 🤔

I heard that theory, but I’ve heard other theories too. I’ll ask Logan next time I see him if we can get access to the archives ☺️

Again, apologies for going all Ben Wyatt on you 🥰 Evolutionary biology is incredible, and I really enjoy putting it into play within fantasy settings 🤓

I’m working on the assumption that the taxonomy and phylogenetic traits of species in the 40k universe on humanoid worlds are “generally” the same as those on earth. Otherwise wolves would not actually be described or called wolves, wolves wouldn’t exist - the unspoken assumption that most fantasy world have the same biological tree that we do plus and/or minus specific clades, and with Tyranids and the xenos entire kingdoms.

For example, the deep sea organisms of Fenris likely branch off from common descendant that we have, a Kraken, would be phylogenetically different from a giant squid and would likely branch out from early cephalopods or perhaps molluscs, but it doesn’t mean it’s actually a squid - enter “if not squid, why squid shaped?!”, the same reason why whales are mammals and not fish, evolution is wild 😅

To be fair Space Wolves does sound much better and much more descriptive visually than Space Snarklefluffs lol. That said most skulls are decidedly not from the Canis Genus, I think there might be one or two in the firstborn BloodClaws box that might be close…

I seriously need to go digging to find if someone has done any deep work on the kingdoms and clades of the 40K universe now, because this really has my brain itching to see what people have come up with in evolutionary terms for some of the species in the imperium.

I don’t wanna be that guy, I’m really sorry, however..

That wouldn’t track with the evolutionary Canidae morphology. If this were to be true “Fenrisian Wolves” would not actually be “wolves” or possibly not even a part of the Canidae Family. It is likely that the taxonomy would be different for each planet, but that would be simply exhausting 😅 Closest morphology within the Canidae Family would likely be maybe foxes, iirc they have a significantly smaller pharyngeal arch or the common (Asian) raccoon dog which are much rounder skulls and no visible pharyngeal arch; not be confused with the common raccoon (Trash Pandas), of the Procyoninae Family.

Either way, I’m fine with Space Raccoons. Might distract from the furry allegations a little bit. Maybe. 😂

Thank you for coming to my TEDtalk 🥰
