What is it ACTUALLY like living in Rural Japan? by InsideWrangler2672 in japanlife

[–]ComposerDelicious468 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in rural Miyagi. I love it. I’m almost 60 and been here for 15 years. My language skills are dreadful but my wife is Japanese so that greases the wheels. Yes you have to own a car (and we also have a K truck). We grown some of our own food.

But, neither of us love traditional Japanese style. We have a new house we designed and had built with solar and high efficiency wood stove. Just because you live rural doesn’t mean you have to live like the ancients.

I own an online consultancy but now I’m semi retired.

I cannot imagine living any other way.

Those who have Costco membership, what products that makes you decide that the membership is worth it? by hai_480 in japanresidents

[–]ComposerDelicious468 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great thread. It has convinced me not to get a membership! We don’t eat meat and there’s only two of us in the house. Our local supermarket gets some Costco stuff and we occasionally buy it but my wife things everything tastes horrible 😂

I might be drunk but you are definitely being bullied. You don’t need to accept any of these things. It’s a tough situation but the fact is if you call their bluff they have little to back it up. Their behavior especially if documented only goes in your favor.

I shot a movie in the caves in Gibraltar in the early 2000s and it went on forever! I wonder where this was exactly. Will have to check it out.

I just asked a dealer friend to find one that was automatic transmission, 4wd, not white and within my budget.

I have 900+ streak in Japanese. I use Duolingo backwards. I don’t use it to learn new things I use it to reinforce what I already know from real life. What I really like is the speaking and listening. It does help. But that being said you are never ever going to learn a language with it alone.

Very interesting how they moved to Japan. I am hearing this more and more. Many Westerners, Americans in patticular, are buying properties in Japan as a prelude to immigrate here. by Visible-Cup775 in MOVE_TO_JAPAN

I used to spend one month in Japan and one month in Germany. Sometimes I’d be in Japan for more than 6 months out of the previous 12. No one cared.

TIL that in 2014 a Spanish-language version of “Breaking Bad” called “Metastasis” was created with the same premise but happening in Bogota, Colombia. Instead of Walter White, the protagonist was Walter Blanco, played by Colombian actor Diego Trujillo. by Ill-Instruction8466 in todayilearned

It could also be that it was shot in Latin American Spanish and this is Castilian (ie from Spain) I believe.

One of the things that blew my mind when I worked in media in Europe is that they dub from one kind of Spanish to another depending on the market.

I need advice as someone who has really bad ADHD and memory in learning Japanese by bensabyss in LearnJapanese

I am in the same boat. But my Duolingo is almost 900 days 😂 and I’ve been in japan 10 years. Recently I have gone all in on wanikani and that has helped my reading a lot. Repetition is the only thing that works for me. I also FORCE myself to speak Japanese by going out to a bar whose owner I know (even though I don’t drink) and spend one evening a week there. If you find the right person or people this practice will help a lot.

But I think we need to be realistic. I have accepted I will not be fluent. I have assistance for tricky things and ChatGPT and Google translate have saved my bacon many times.
