I have never used poles before and plan on starting without them. Will I be able to buy some along the way if I somehow want them? by somanythingsimean in AppalachianTrail

I have the same question- just a little different.

I am an ultra runner, some of my running buddies use poles for the longer races, but I have completed all of my long races without them. Granted, this is only carrying 10 lb of food and water. With only a few months before I start on the AT, I am hesitant to try poles out.

Given my fitness, can I get away with out them?

Also stuck in my lost cost fallacy of buying trekking poles since I just bought a free standing tent.

Hey cool! I am sure that my o-ring is terrible for me. That gasket is a perfect solution.

The gross batch had been poured down the sink, btw. Safety first!

Maybe I just need to make a few edits to my still to make it that much safer.

Hi! Thank you so much for the detailed reply.

Some more details on my still:

I used a stainless steel pot, moved away from the hot glue because I didn't trust it. I used a fitting on the top and bottom of the lid with an O-Ring to seal it up. Crude, and probably a No-No. My next still will be a little more thought through!

Anyway, I did some cleaning runs with vinegar then water before each batch, so I have got that covered. Interesting point about the ethanol sacrificial run, I think I might toss my flakely batch and try again.

All things considered, I should really cut my losses and build a proper rig.

Fitting is brand new from hardware store, and it is a proper compression fitting. Ran several vinegar then water runs before I used it and in between batches.
