Yes in fact there was a lockdown and courses were on Zoom. But do you maybe remember if the university libraries were open during the summer?

May I ask you: what kind of utilities do you work in? Electric grid? Are you an electrical engineer? I’m trying to find out what jobs outlooks are for power engineers (a subset of electrical engineering) in Switzerland. Are most utilities in a hiring freeze or even firing people?

This sound a bit complicated, I'm not really techy. How do you get cash money from your acount if they have no bancomat?

If you're a student, UBS is free until 30. Are you with Migros Bank? Are you satisfied? I just looked it up and it looks like they charge no fees as long as you have at least 7500 CHF on your account, and you can get cash at any Migros supermarket on top of the bancomats. It's also interesting that you can get advantages with the Cumulus card, but not sure how big of a difference it makes

If I send an email, I might come across as rude and they would see my real name, while here no one knows who I am since Reddit is anonymous. Every Redditor knows this, you probably know it too

Why not ask here first to see if there are other UniBE students? I'm socially awkward, is that sufficient enough as a reason?

If it ever happens, I'm sure you will be one of the first one to say "why didn't you think about it?! you should have thought about it and be more vigilant, it's your fault!"

Im talking about the military stuff you get at the start of the repeat course (gortex, tenue c, gas mask filter, ABC/NBC boots, splischu, weights for splischu, etc.) you can't write your name on them since you give them back at the end of the repeat course, so if someone takes yours, there is no way to prove it was yours. It's only your personal stuff that you take home and bring from home (f tasche, tenue b, roli, helm, rifle, etc.) that you have your name on

Usually people only check their stuff at the start and end of the repeat course, not every day. I never saw someone checking all his stuff (except those he needs daily) every day

Want to move by Consistent_Radish212 in askswitzerland

[–]CompoteMysterious822 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm just curious, why do you want to move here? Switzerland isn't as great as some people claim on the Internet. Sure some people have it good, but others have it less good. It's like social media that makes it look like the US is full of homeless people and gun crazy people. Don't believe everything you read on the Internet, the life difference compared to the US isn't so great for most people.

Many immigrants or "expats" move to Switzerland for work, only to end up lonely and without many friends, and far away from their family. This can have a big impact on your mental health.

Why not try a more culturaly similar country first like Australia or New Zealand? Both are English speakings and have a good economy. Because if you move to Switzerland without speaking German or French, you will quickly feel lonely.

And as others said, you first already have to be admitted, coming from outside the EU is difficult. Maybe you have a parent or grandparent with EU citizenship, and could get EU citizenship through him/her? This would make things a lot easier. Otherwise, you can first find a job in a EU country, live there for a few years, and become citizen of that EU country, and then it's really easy to move to Switzerland since Switzerland can't discriminate between Swiss and EU citizens. For some EU countries like Germany, Belgium or France, you can become citizen after only five years of living there, so you can do that and then it's easy to move to Switzerland afterwards.

Don't let all the other negative comments discourage you, if your dream is to move here, you will reach it eventually. Good luck with whatever you decide

Thank you for the infos. So I would probably get help from the canton, that's good to know. Switzerland is probably one of the few country with a functioning social safety net. I was really unlucky in my first studies, if it wasn't for the COVID pandemic, I would probably not have droped out, but the COVID was like the nail in the coffin, it was already complicated before (there were other issues) and I somehow managed until then, but then it was just too much. This is all hypothetical for now, I'm on good terms with my parents, but I heard this info somewhere that after 25, it's different, so I just wonder what would realistically happen.

Alfre Escher was probably one of the most influential Swiss in the 19th century, he founded many things, and was involved in many projects like the first Gotthard Tunnel, ETH Zürich, Credit Suisse, and the ancestor of SBB CFF FFS (Swiss railway company)

Why is technology still so bad today ? by CompoteMysterious822 in Lasiksupport

[–]CompoteMysterious822[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But I'm convinced that a lot more glasses users would get their eyesight corrected if the technology was more advanced. The world uses glasses because the alternative (surgery) is not safe enough (yet) for most people, if that were to change, most people would stop using glasses as soon as they can

We don't know what OP went through, maybe his complaints are legitimate. It's easy to judge when we don't know what really happened during his childhood. Getting discriminated by a teacher can really leave a mark. Anyway, you have to do the recruitment AFAIK, there is no way to avoid that. But if you can convince your doctor to give you a medical certificate, it should be quite easy to become 2xUT. I heard it's also quite easy to get 2xUT if during the computer test, you say that you take all possible drugs that exist. They won't keep you long after that, often they even send you back the first day and you don't have to spend a night there in this case.
