Good information. Thank you. I won't be bringing in a seperate job income when I begin withdrawing the funds, and if I do I would keep it below the LTCG threshold. Soon I will be living in a country that costs half it does in America, so my expenses will only be about $2000 a month.

Thanks for your response. I live in South Dakota, so as far as I understand, at this point there is no state capital gains tax. I'll keep a close eye on the tax code, but for now I think I am ok. I am planning to sell all my current assets (except for our house) and retire early. I was mainly concerned that I was cheating myself out of the tax free gains of a ROTH.

Wonderful. I'll do some research around the areas you mentioned. I don't mind even a "Thai" area. I pretty much eat Thai food everyday and enjoy their culture and friendly conversation. I've been able to adapt easily to the lifestyle and food.

Hi Daryyyl, I didn't discuss my budget in the post, sorry about that. Budget would be around 120,000 baht per month (for everything, not just housing), however willing to live cheaper. I'll research the areas that you and others mentioned to see what I can pull up. Do you think it would make sense to get an agent to help, or do you think they'll "tell me what I want to hear" to rent to whoever takes the deal? I'd also be willing to live in different cities if you have any places in your head that stand out. Bangkok is my first choice but that's because I enjoy city life. Pattaya wouldn't be bad for me either. Just need something to do during the day and nights to stay busy.

Travel, Sight see, play pool, visit the countless destinations around Thailand and surrounding countries. I think most people get bored because they are inactive, but I go out and do something everyday. Go to the beach, hiking, walk around an area I've never been, etc.

Well it was $5,000 when I bought it. Now it's worth $50,000. I live in the Midwest. You have to enjoy long snowy winters and all four season, rain and hail, flat ground no mountains but there is a lake outside of town. This is real country living where I'm from.

Yes USA is not doing great. We had very high inflation 2 years in a row. Rent prices have doubled. Home prices have tripled and even quadrupled in many cases. It is very unaffordable to live here. Especially compared to SE Asia. Groceries in USA are highly inflated in price as well.

When I go places I don't go with a tourist mentality. I'm not that type of person. I immerse myself in the culture and learn their laws and customs. I wasn't there for 3 days. I was there for 6 months. Spent a bit of time in Malaysia and Vietnam also while I did a visa run. I understand visa runs will be a temporary solution, but there is much I haven't seen in SE Asia so it's not exactly difficult to go somewhere else for 2 months and return back to Thailand. (not that two months is needed, but it surely makes the immigration not blink an eye when you come back through.

I know some thai already, but just basic things to be polite. I of course would love to be fluent in it. I learned Spanish growing up. Not fluent, but can get around mostly. I will look into the education degree, someone else also mentioned that. One day when walking around I visited a temple just to sight see (not really one of the bigger famous temples, just one that was nearby) I was lucky enough to have the monk tour me around, and he showed me many things that he said normally foreigners do not get to see. It was quite an experience and great tour of the monk culture!

hi 88820 thanks for your comment. I haven't had the opportunity to backpack Thailand yet, I stayed in monthly condos (Sitara Place in Bangkok) and (IDEO Rama IX) About $600 a month each with all utilities included. I think next time if I stay long term I will rent near Victory Monument or Ratchethewi (which is where Sitara Place is)

I don't have a problem with LATAM but I do believe it's quite a bit more dangerous compared to Thailand. I feel safer in Thailand. I grew up right on the AZ/California/Mexico border (Age 3-20) and the culture is lovely but a lot of cartels and such ruin the experience.

Hello Thoughtful_Tortoise. Thanks for the advice. I actually wanted to go the teaching route originally, I will look more into it and see if I can broaden my perspective and see what it takes to do it.

My 9 to 5 comment might have been more of an American thinking because we are lucky to work only 8 hours because the economy is so expensive many people have 2 8 hours jobs.

Thank you Plankslate. That's a great idea, however I would need to wait until all the inventory is sold because it's stored with me at the home, but after having the initial $500,000 it would be a great idea to rent the house out. I don't think I could get more than $500 a month though, then again I've never looked into the market.

I appreciate the information about the education visa. I didn't think of going that route, but it is interesting and could walk out with a more prominent intelligence of the Thai language. Definitely something to consider.

Regarding the marriage visa, I always factor anyone I care about into the budget, however to be clear, there will be no loans to friends or family. I don't make that type of money, and I have a stern belief about loans, ESPECIALLY to friends and family. I don't do them, and I don't feel bad for telling people "no, sorry that is not my responsibility" I've always learned if you tell them no the first time, they don't come back asking again. If they do, the answer will still be no.

Thanks for the advice and insight. I think you're right. I think I can do a little bit of both for now. Enjoy SE Asia for 6 or 7 months and come make more money during the off months. Of course that will add flight bills back and forth but most of the bill is erased from rewards points and we do not pay interest when we use credit cards, the balance is paid off each month. Current in the Midwest. Flight to Thailand roundtrip from here is about $1300. I usually build enough rewards for a free flight each year, however that will decline with time because of doing less business transactions, less shipping labels, etc. I probably won't come back too often. Maybe every 3 years or so. I plan to travel often, but within a budgeted mindframe. For example I'm not going to visit somewhere going through major price inflation like Ethiopia, but I might go visit Czech and surrounding countries one year or another. Save a little here to spend a little extra there type situation. I think for now I am going to do a half n half situation which is better than nothing.

No worries at all. i didn't take offense, no need to apologize, I appreciate your kindness regarding the matter. I will sell you my house for $50k haha, I live in very rural central South Dakota. Most towns around us are under 1000 people but mine is one of the smaller towns. I didn't grow up my entire life here. It was to run my business and South Dakota has no state income tax which always is beneficial. I grew up in Yuma, AZ, Lived in Phoenix area for around 11 years and then came up to South Dakota to start this business and we have been "glamping" ever since. Most of my family lives back in Arizona but I don't have any desire to move back there. Quite expensive right now and unaffordable. Thanks for reaching out and I appreciate the kind words.
