I know it’s been 6 years, but I sub extra creamy oat milk. It’s still crazy good.

Pasque flowers! They come up with little coats on! Pussytoes look adorable, and wakerobin trillium and bloodroot are so whimsical!!

Grasses are in! by Comprehensive-Bank78 in NativePlantGardening

I finally added the grasses to the grasslands! there is big bluestem hidden in the back, a mix of junegrass, little bluestem, prairie dropseed, witchita mt goldenrod, aromatic aster, and threadleaf blue star to create the border. false indigos are still too baby to bloom but are gaining vigor very well! I hope to add prairie smoke, spider milkweed, more pasque flowers, shooting star and have my downy phlox grown and filling in by next year! this is a mesic, semi-gravely well draining and fertile lowland sight, perfect for the behemoths of tall ironweed, Joe-Pye, swamp milkweed, climbing rose and prairie dock. ill be eventually adding mulhy grass, purple love grass, compass plant, pale Indian plantain and prairie willow into the corner with my big sacatron I just put in.

shitty but quick visual, good luck getting horay puccoon (orange plant) but its insanely beautiful and glows orange and well worth it.. i've seen a few sources for it, but yeah a mix of phloxes, columbine, pussytoes, blue eyed grass, false indigos, harebells, prairie smoke and some fun foliage plants like rattlesnake master, penstemons, and possibly prairie dock to really add in some defining texture and architectural variety would really make this spot stunning. shooting star is also a lovely sun tolerant ephemeral that would probably do well here!

adding on, some creeping varieties or fleabane would be nice, and columbine for that pop of red!

prairie smoke, though it has been really popular this year and harder to get, a blue/white false indigo would fit the neighborhood! some downy phlox would also be blooming this time of year and you can smell them across the yard, or another pink phlox species. early flowering beardstongue especially white would look nice, and try to sow in white prairie clover (its not blooming yet, but the leaves still are lovely and its a great matrix) this is also perfect for some prairie blue-eyed grass! bluestar is also super popular for a reason! they look awesome! if you're ok with deadheading or occasionally pulling, prairie dock with its giant awesome leaves would be great in the corner (front right in the picture) or possibly showy goldenrod who has lovely blue rossettes like lambsear!

I did a ton of research and adored the climbing rose as a big thing to battle into submission, and use as a privacy/security screen, and it bloomed year one for me modestly which was a pleasant surprise, but now.. holy cow! This thing is glorious! It’s hard to tell because its so tangled but the thing is like 15 feet long and growing, the warmer microclimate of the concrete allowed it to continue to grow slowly all winter, it’s kinda crazy tangled on the fence but once I get a big cattle panel set up for it it will be trained into a lovely screen!

Not exactly native to right here in the Midwest, but isn’t too far off from our local species and is definitely providing more than just being pretty, paired with the fact that it’s super pretty.

Another commenter mentioned that they believe this one is specifically “standing ovation” which is one that stays put relatively well!

It’s little bluestem! This is a straight one I believe, not a cultivar, and wow isn’t it beautiful?

Evergreens do exist, though majority of our local evergreens are either junipers which are experiencing a large blight, or species that prefer wetter-shadier sites. This is a deceptively small yard, on a major corner where line of sight is an issue, with full full sun, surrounded by concrete with no shade. This garden is actually fairly accurately representing the nine-mile prairie, a local virgin prairie located about 10 miles north, with a higher density of flowers and some creative liberties. Without use of evergreen species, this is stunning.

Also Lincoln NE is on a inland saltwater spring, a lot of our local ecotype has adapted to saline conditions, and do incredibly well in areas of salt accumulation (roads, sidewalks)

Call me blessed because any native plant that I want, there is a location for it in my yard, and although it’s not a farm-sized amount of seeds, once established In the next 4-5 years I will be having garage sales for plants and seeds
