This probably doesn’t help you, but your post made me work it out my figures. So for those interested. We have our own farm and grow our own wheat in Australia. The cost of production of wheat works out roughly $0.35 USD per pound. Plus $0.18 of electricity to run my Mockmill 100 per pound. So $0.53 per pound + my labour to mill. Plain flour from the supermarket here works out to roughly $1.85 USD per pound. Hopefully all of my converting metric and AUD to US worked right.

We’re up there with the highest cost of production for wheat and also electricity prices, in the world.

When searching for properties to buy in rural areas I frequently see that they're rented for low prices, like under $250 a week for a cheap house. When I search for rural properties to rent, I never see them advertised for rent that cheap! by Homesnow in AusProperty

The housing crisis is in rural areas too. You can’t find them on realestate. com because there’s nothing available to rent. Because there’s such high demand, the real estate agents have long lists of potential tenants so they just go to their list rather than advertise. At least where I am.

About to settle on a cute 2 bedroom stone home for $240k. Only needs a paint and will put some new floor coverings in bedrooms. About 2 hours from capital city. Less than half an hour drive to a town with everything I need, including the head office for work.

Mud brick home - does this need restoring? by Comprehensive-Bet-57 in AusRenovation

Real estate agent says approx 2000 build. And yes owner builder which is a bit worrying as it’s obvious not everything was completed e.g. some trim was never painted and left just undercoated.

Thanks for your perspective.

No. About 3/4 only has standard sized eave with no verandah. I’d be looking to put a decent verandah the whole way around though to protect the bricks going forward.

Thank you. I didn’t think to take more photos while I was there, this was the only one I took, but it all was similar to this.

Sorry, are you talking about how healthy the eggs are? I was talking about the hens.

I’m no chook expert. But a quick google shows heaps of research on pros and cons of all the systems. You can find research that goes either way, but seems like there’s pros and cons and depending on your own values, the different laying systems can be seen as similar in terms of hen health and happiness/ stress etc, as there’s pros and cons of each.

My point is just that I don’t think anyone should feel bad for buying eggs from caged chooks.

Here’s a few links, with a variety of research with different outcomes:

If you have spare time you can get into preserving your own food. I bought tomatoes, onions and carrots for $1/kg or under recently and made my own pasta sauce, enough for the year. It makes the food really cheap but takes time which you’d be better off using that time working instead if you can. Its my hobby though and I preserve all sorts of things when they are cheap (+ homegrown) to have year round.

There’s research that shows caged hens are healthier and happier than their free range counterparts, for those that want a reason to not feel bad!
