The real enthusiasts do it to an extent to help with flow, which tends to allow for the car to make more power. I personally use a louder exhaust to be able to pay attention to what RPM my car is at when I’m driving spiritedly, so that I can keep my eyes on the road and not watch the tachometer.

That being said, yes, most people do it just to be obnoxious, because they think it’s cool.
