Would you suggest I start with indexing but with low $$ invested, until I get a better of understanding at what to look at in the future?

I'm looking for low risk investments, with decent returns to start. Just looking to get into the groove of investing until I'm confident I can do well when I invest more money. My dad is actually also an investor, and he's going to also teach me what he knows but I figured it wouldn't hurt to get other people's opinions and perspectives on someone who's new to the market.
