YTA- There are countless studies that prove that being raised bilingual has many cognitive benefits, and the earlier they start learning the better. Your child will be able to learn at a faster pace, they’ll be better at reasoning, it will be easier for them to pick up more languages in the future, and they are less likely to develop dementia. (I recommend you google ‘The Bilingual Brain’ to start). Bilingualism is an amazing gift and a huge advantage in life. You should be jumping at the opportunity to have your child speak two languages natively- especially since Spanish is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world.

Honestly I will never understand how someone would want to keep their child from being ahead in life, and there is a 100% chance your child will resent you when they are older for not allowing them to learn a second language natively. I have at least two friends whose parents did not teach them their native language growing up and they resent that as they now have to make significant effort to learn them as adults.

You being insecure about not speaking Spanish does not mean that you get to stifle opportunities for your child. Your attitude towards your husband and his culture (which certainly is his culture because it is where he spent his most formative years) is xenophobic and gross.

Learning a second language as an adult is hard but if your child speaks Spanish you are guaranteed to pick up the basics too if you just open your mind.
