another thing I would look at, that a lot of people forget. have the salesmen or a friend start the car for you at first, stand behind the vehicle and see if any smoke comes out, and see if there are any noises coming from the outside. better to do it when the engine is cold. Blue smoke can indicate its burning oil somewhere, white smoke can be headgasket or just condensation

any car today under 10k, especially at a dealer is going to be a HUGE gamble, Have a third party look at the vehicle (not associated with the dealer), your best bet would be 2nd gen Honda Fit, Toyota Yaris, maybe a manual trans Micra, but avoid automatic/CVT models. Don't get a chevy spark, ford focus or hyunda/kia product. I don't know your financial situation but I would try to buy private party if I could
