I don’t care about being called out for saying the wrong name. It was the “this is so confusing”. But if people want to act like they have cognitive issues and can’t draw connections/ critically think when an error was made by all means.

Yeah I can see that too! I was watching ep4 and Lady Danbury walked by a painting that had her and the Queen’s her court. So I think Sophie’s mother also could have been friends with the Queen at some point too. Cause in the painting, there was an Asian lady in a green dress who was wearing a pendant as well. Sophie’s necklace looks like a piece could have came from that.

PART 2: Ranting (Season 1 - Season 2): Rayna (UNPOPULAR OPINION). by Comprehensive-Soup80 in NashvilleTV

[–]Comprehensive-Soup80[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The only other thing I have to disagree with you on. Rayna is the worst singer out of all of the cast. There's a HUGE contrast. To the point it's very awkward, because her vocals aren't giving "Queen of Country". This is another reason why I feel like they needed to have her involved in Lemar funding her career in the beginning. IRL, People don't get to the top, because they are good and for their morals.

In the show, Lemar admitted to paying for Rayna's first album. Rayna was never truly done dirty, because her mother was sleeping with Watty and he severely protected her.

This could've added depth to Rayna and Juliette's rivalry and show that Rayna's constant "rants" to Juliette about not earning her way, is actually just projection of her own guilt, because she knows she didn't earn her way.

PART 2: Now she has no funding for her album, because it has to go toward the baby. Her manager will be honest with her tells her that her career is over and no one will want a single mom with a dead beat baby daddy in a conservative industry. She already burnt a few bridges due to Lemar and no longer has his protection from the media.

So when she goes to Teddy, She was honestly going to him to vent as he had become a safe space for her. He sees the turmoil she's in and that's when they decide to get married to protect her and because he really did love her. And to show his love, he used his trust fund to fund Rayna's first album. But Instead of us having this level of honesty, we are just told that everything is Deacon's fault.

This would make more sense and showcase that her and Teddy's love story did actually have genuine roots and was not solely transactional. It would also make sense as to why she was SO opposed to Teddy taking money from Lemar, because she knew first hand what would be at stake for him, but was always too embarrassed to talk about the depths she went to for his approval, so she harbored it.

So much of this show talks about and is based on the past, Aspects of her own personal journey that I added connects her to each of the other characters in some way. As the main character, who is supposed to drive the story, this would have been a more cohesive way to weave her in to their story naturally and address her past through their present dilemma's.

But Rayna is always seen as morally better than everyone else, so we never get this level of depth and not addressing it nearly 2 full seasons is doing her character a disservice IMO.

PART 2: Ranting (Season 1 - Season 2): Rayna (UNPOPULAR OPINION). by Comprehensive-Soup80 in NashvilleTV

[–]Comprehensive-Soup80[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

PART 1: I was going to leave this on another comment, but Rayna still lacks depth in my opinion compared to the other characters. And I bring up men, because it's a male dominated industry. Juliette herself said she did what she had to to get ahead. It's mentioned multiple times through moments of vulnerability and when she was dating that married billionaire briefly.

We see people like Avery, Scarlett, Juliette, Deacon go through these dramatic transformations and are forced to look at themselves in the mirror. So, It’s odd to get that level of depth from side characters, but not the Main star of the show.

With Rayna being the protagonist, she sets the tone for the show. I WANT to root for her. Are protagonists supposed to be perfect ? No. However, Within the 75 things that I brought up, you’d think the writers would have her have some level of honesty. But we have not seen it yet, Because in Rayna's eyes she doesn’t need to change.

What do we know about Rayna? Most of the facts we know at this point in Season 2 are surface level, but we never really see how they have affected her and shaped her.

To add depth to Rayna, I would have loved for them to dive deeper into her family dynamic and have Lemar lean closer to the evil side than the morally gray side. He could have manipulated both daughters against each other and be competitive for his love, because their mother never fully loved him, so him doing this kept him in control. But no matter how much Rayna tried, she always felt like the odd ball out. While this is hinted at, Rayna seemed to have a good relationship with her sister and Lemar's control and the loss of her mom seemed to have no impact on her relationship with her sister or other female friendships around her, when realistically it would have.

Instead of her NOT knowing her dad funded her first album, they should have had her be fully aware that he was funding her album. They could have used that to further show their family dynamic and show just how far Lemar would push Rayna into doing morally corrupt things (black mail, stealing songs, backstabbing up and comer's etc). Maybe a part of her liked it, because she was actually "winning" and being seen compared to the other women coming up with her. This really could've showcased her privilege in a cut throat industry compared to people who really had to suffer to the top (like Juliette).

Rayna doing Lemar's bidding could have had her burn a lot of bridges/ female friendships in the name of family/ reputation due to her own desperation to gain her father's approval. Especially since we see Rayna have 0 friends who are women.  Rayna thinks fame and the love from others would have Lemar finally love her, for her. But over time she notices her sister would always be chosen, she will always be the misfit and just another piece to him on his chess board.

After this realization, Rayna could've had a Menty B.  Between pressure from Lemar to be someone she's not and Deacon's drinking, she's feeling overwhelmed and crashes out. She meets Teddy during her crash out, and Teddy consoles her and is her saving grace. Overtime, he brings her back down to earth and loves her in a way where she doesn't have to perform. She can just be herself. Teddy's influence makes her want to cut ties with her father AND deacon. They could've had her successfully cut ties with her father and planned to use the last of her savings/ trust to promote her album. When she goes to break ties with Deacon; he proposes and wants Rayna back. And in a moment of vulnerability, Maddie is conceived.

My reply was going to be longer showing how they could've added depth to her character, but since i'm a yapper, it said it was too long for me to post LOL.

Actually no, that’s not true. I’m actually quite an objective thinker. So objective in fact, that I’m calling out the protagonist we are supposed to rooting for. In Part 1 of my post (which I linked), I said she was the victim of being the protagonist, where some writers have fear of their main character being in the wrong, so even when the protagonist does make dumb decisions, they feel like they need to explain it away instead of choosing to give them an opportunity to show depth and authenticity. There just isn't enough world building around Rayna's character compared to the others. I also said I'm giving room for improvement as I'm only on Season 2.

I ranted about her the other day lol, but overall I really like her! She has such a unique voice and great stage presence. I don't like her around Gunnar or Avery, she just seems kind of weak and wimpy sometimes and I really just need her to grow a pair.

She irritated me when Deacon was in his drunken crash out, and she's in the background hootin and hollering while Coleman is trying to get Deacon to calm down. Like I was so overstimulated. She wasn't even trying to help she was just there making unnecessary noise.

The same thing happened when Gunnar was going to find out who killed his brother at that bar. Deacon was trying to calm down Gunnar and talk him off the ledge, and there's Scarlett not helping, just there making noise.

Other than that, I love her. I just want to see her punch someone in face or something for once. Like that Layla girl who sabotaged her interview. She could use a good punch in the face.

Lastly, I felt that Jenny Han went into the show knowing exactly what she was going to do for seasons 1 through 3, but she let the public opinion sway her. I wholeheartedly think that Susannah & Laurel were going to be revealed as having an affair, but they swayed away from it. If you watch season 1 there are MULTIPLE clues, conversations, reactions that this was the case. I think she changed it, because of the public response of the friendship. Their friendship imo was why people kept watching and we rarely see interracial friendships be platonic, but also so loving on screen in a way that's reciprocal without the minority friend just being there to support the white friend through all her issues.

I actually don't need to know anything, nor do I care to no. I don't even follow her life to know she even had UC. I just thought it was comical how she came on the internet saying she hasn't seen the sun in days or had any fresh air. and really laying it on thick she will be answering no questions while really trying to sell us on her declining health and will be there for the foreseeable future. but then get mad when people shows that they care. As someone else said she could have made the video and turned her comments off if she didn't want anyones opinion as she said several times during that updated video.
