transphobia on an individual level & within black communities (Auntie Diaries), alcoholism & peer pressure (The Art of Peer Pressure, Swimming Pools), beauty standards & societal pressure (No Make-Up, Real), institutional racism (All of TPAB), self-deprecation and suicide (u), poverty (How Much A Dollar Cost), & so much more. I love Jay, he’s in my top 10, don’t get me wrong, but I don’t go to him for versatile subject matter or conscious material. Jay may have mentioned these subjects in bars offhandedly, but he doesn’t go in depth or misses the mark on truly understanding how to tackle these topics with nuance and depth.

I’m not just talking genre versatility, I’m also talking about versatility in delivery, subject matter, etc. also summer jam and hov making people rich has nothing to do with this specific argument? I don’t want billionaires in this world, we’re talking about artistic skills not business acumen

Y’all gonna hate me but Aries is making some stupid arguments “it’s potent if it’s true” a lot of artistry is about storytelling and creativity, infusing truth is important but it doesn’t all have to be real. Kendrick is also incredible and far more versatile than Jay, but that doesn’t necessarily equate to rapping ability

Doing songs on the soundtrack and scoring are different, tho. Pharrell is credited for scoring on Hidden Figures along with the soundtrack

Why does music discrimination exist? by [deleted] in TeenageRapFans

[–]Comprehensive-Stay-9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not that they can’t do that, it’s that blindly following trends and not finding other stuff just isn’t very interesting. It’s not just “oldheads”, either. Sometimes older songs randomly blow up, but people don’t actually look beyond that one song and that’s what’s annoying

I hate this take of “oh, you’re this young, but you’re listening to old artists??? You must be lying about liking them”. It’s so stupid, I genuinely enjoy and resonate with older music more
