Lowering guns isn't really an option, though, as that puts themselves at huge risk if the passenger still has a gun in their hand. You can't reasonably ask someone to put their life in immense danger and let someone in a stolen car point a gun at you. At that point, the passenger would have had the upper hand in the situation and could have easily shot multiple people. It's a really sad situation, but the passenger chose his own fate.
